The SL quarters probably weren't saved because of the Great Depression in the early 30's. Basically no coins really made 1931-1933, a few cents, not too much else. Any that were being saved probably had to be spent on stuff like food.

I can guarantee you there are better things to save than these modern rolls. Take $1,000 face value in these rolls ( if you even get them for face) vs. something under-rated like capped bust quarters of the early 1830's, which list for about $125 in F-12. Try and find 8 nice ones for that price, it's a scarce coin.

Now 50 years later you wake up dead one day. Your heirs get the rolls or the 8 quarters. I'm certain those old quarters will be worth more.

How and why did you end up with so many newer nickels???

Not complaining or putting down, just curious as you may have a good plan or idea that none of us thought of.....

I bought a Bag of Nickels and a Bag of Quarters, just to say I have them.... I might open them in like 20+ years or so, but I doubt it....

    I gotta ask you too,
How and why did you end up with so many newer nickels???

And how many do you have anyway??? You too have intrigued me with the Nickel Hoards... :)

and like I said above, you guys might be on to something that I never thought of....

Thalia (my daughter) has a set of four that her grandfather gave her, plus one extra Bison that one of the members of our local coin club gave out to the junior members, which I thought was nice.

I like the coins for the history that they portray, but I don't ever think they'll be all time personal favorites and I'm not planning to accumulate any more.

    What about modern coin varieties?

I have a large 1938-2006 Jefferson collection w/ proofs going back to 1956. All are AU to BU to MS quality. You are so right about wanting to make money. That was my goal in assembling the set. However, now that the set is done, I can't bear to part with it! I have my "Jefferson Nickel Analyst" out all the time and am learning a lot.

The bison nickels are another story. What's the group opinion regarding errors and varieties? I have carded hundreds after going through bags and rolls. What fun! In my quest to make a buck, I have become a collector who can't bear to part with any of my coins. I now subscribe to the mags & online groups as well.

I do want to pass all of thecoins down to the grandkids. Do the errors at least have a shot of appreciating in value for them or should I sell them now on eBay?

    Thanks for a lively thread!

inventory of westward nickels that i owned

    100 rolls of 2004 peace medals (p) --- 4,000 pc
    100 rolls of 2005 am bison (p) --- 4,000 pc
    100 rolls of 2006 return... (p) --- 4,000 pc
total 12,000 pc --- got it directly from banks with some freight charges and other fees.
i don't have 2004 keelboat and 2005 ocean in view. simply i don't like the designs. i also did not buy any from u.s.mint nickel roll. 12,000 pc cost $600.00 at face value. spent some $100.00 for charges and fees.

remainding 1,150 pc ($57.50) mostly composed of au condition from 2004 to 2006. and 90 pc from 2005 (10 pc) to 2006 (20 pc) silver proof set, 2005 (20 pc) proof set and 2005 (40 pc) satin finish mint set.

reason is very simple. i like nickel.

my future plan is to collect more circulated nickels from 1938 to 2003. target 10,000 pc. at face value. monetary value $500.00. and remember the bullion vlaue of nickel coins is worth over face value right now.

This is only half right. The market price of any commodaty is just that, the price that something was recorded at being sold between a buyer ans a sell...pure and simple.

Where you are correct is that the odds that these coins will remain at these prices in a decade is nearly zero. There are 10's if not 100's MILLIONS of them, and every smart, forward thinking American with warm feelings about their childhood GSA CC Morgan that they sold at 15 years of age is packing them up for their children's college tutition.

Then there is the guillible people swept into the hype of a commodities buble, which as a fact will crash.

So it is not so much as these coins are not fancied by 'real collectors' as it is that there aren't enough collectors, real or otherwise, in the world to put a real dent on the supply of these coins to drive the prices up once the bubble bursts.

Maybe when about 1/2 of them get destroyed or lost over time there will be some movement on these, say in 50 years. Do yourself a favor and invest in US Savings Bonds instead.

I dont save any pocket change with the intent to collect it. i use it all in the end.If you ask me ,,Pretty much every coin from 1964 until now. is not worth honestly collecting. Spend it all. Save only the silver and gold. Sell your no date silver coins for melt value when the market is high. and forget all about the moden crap. becuase it is JUST CRAP. Also if you beleive this statement your a idoit. But honestly those peace nickles are not worth holding on to. i got a hole role 2 days ago. I asked the kid at a gas station i go to every other day to save me any rolls he might get no matter what it is. I spent them. becuase i know that way to many people have them. I used to work at a gas station years ago. Iwould always get rolls of coins from people buying gas and butts. I alwasy made sure i cracked open those rolls because i really DONT LIKE THE MODERN change. Its dull and i have seen it all my life. I would really like to see something NEW and fresh It would be great to see all the money across the board be changed. IMHO.

If you like nickles, does it really do any harm? Granted you won't get rich, but if you are in it for fun, why not? Think if you found a way to attach them to a wall and then you could have the "Great wall" of nickles. Or get enough so that if you laid them edge to edge, you could cover the distance of the westward journey? I have enough nickles to go from Boston to San Francisco! There is some bragging rights for you!

I looked in my change jar and found 2. So I have....2.

    Tracy,
You just keep collecting what you like, that is what this hobby is all about I have been collecting Jefferson nickels for over thirty years because I like them there your coins and your collection. And to those collectors who think that what someone else collects is crap you need to remember what this hobby is all about and this forum.

I might have as many as a half dozen of each type...might.

If you want to see a profit from all those nickels..take the $600 and buy a few key date coins.
