Can anyone tell me what grade this coin falls under or close i already know most of the value but it depends on the grade and i havent learned how to yet. from what i can tell its in good shape but any information that can be offered would be welcomed with open arms. I paid $25 for it so i already know i got a decent deal on it silver value wise since anyone who invest in silver like me knows it will go back up. Thanks for looking! (Sorry about the Pictures there not the best) Justin
Don't believe the coin has the luster to support an AU-grade (possibly because the coin's surfaces have been altered/cleaned), so for now, I'll say XF45. This date is amongst the most common-dated Morgans, so as far as commanding a premium goes for your coin- No. -Brian
Even the larger pictures are blurry, hard to tell. My guess would be, looks to be EF or better but clearer pictures would help determining the grade.
sorry about the pics its the best my iphone can do haha. I bought it soley for the silver value however it looks in decent shape thats why i am asking. I also understand its a very common coin i think San Fransisco produced upwards of 12 million that year but it looks to still have amazing detail ( breast feathers on the eagle can be seen pretty clearly and so forth) i was afraid it might be cleaned also which i was afraid of because then all but silver value is gone just looking for any info thanks guys/gals! :smile Justin
Regardless of it's grade, $25 was a fair price. You paid only about $2.00 over current silver spot price.
Well, it was about $2 lower just a few weeks ago. Only time will tell, but paying $2 over spot is what most dealers will charge, so you got a fair price. Go check out this same year and condition coin on eBay and you'll see people will overpay by $10-$30 in some cases. I'd have no doubt you could turn around and sell this coin for an easy $40 on eBay.
Agreed, this coin appears to be cleaned...but even if it's not this coin is only worth it's melt value. The 1880-S is readily available in high MS grades and very affordable, as a result the circulated coins only sell for melt. So, I think you did fine with the price you paid and in the long run I expect silver to go up so you did fine.
It's down as far as everyone else is concerned too. You have a common date, worth $23.61 that you paid a small retail price for.
