What would cause these marks?

Noticed on this 1984 cent that above the "IN" are three vertical marks that are continuation of the "I" and the legs of the "N". They are sunken , so I don't know if from die marks, worn die or what ? Just curious as to how they are made, not looking for it to be an error. To perfect to be PMD and only above the 'IN".

I believe those marks are incuse or indented into the surface of the coin. That could mean that the coin was either struck by something or something got caught in the die and imprinted the coin when it was struck. I am thinking that metal from a previous strike got caught in the die and made those marks into the coin.

Hopefully, one of the experts can tell us ? I will be watching along with you.

The mark next the "i " looks
    like die error.

Very neat coin! Maybe take it to a coin show and ask around?

I still think its on the die. A id mark made by die cuter or worker at the mint.
