The coin is a counterfeit. The edges are chipped and the inside is grayish. I picked up a few of these ancients for a dollar each at a thrift store so I'm not worried. If anything it makes me feel better that nobody else bought it and is trying to pass them off as authentic.
This German medal is a newp from FUN. It is almost 3 inches across and apparently made of cast iron. Something about the germans bombing England, but I thought it was interesting because of the skeleton and the way it was sculpted from the side and rear. I thought it was pretty cool so I thought you guys would like it too. Matt
Well, it's bombs being dropped on factories. Here are some more war propaganda medals by Walther Eberbach: http://www.museum-digital.de/san/index.php?sv=eberbach&done=yes Christian
Thanks for the link. I can see that now you mention it Christian, but if you look at the building towers as piers, it looks like a dock, and the fire rising fom the buildings could be seen as the river current. Maybe I am just thinking too dark this morning.
I picked up a Mexican 10 Centavo from 1871 that's got me flummoxed on the mint mark: http://www.cointalk.com/t198230/ At the same time, I picked up a few other silver minors, including a 1921 Mexican 20 Centavos, a 1916 Canadian 50 cent, a 1944 Ethiopian 50 Cent, a 1944 Dutch Antilles 2.5 Gulden, and a mystery coin that I can't quite pin down. I thought it might be an Afghani 20 Paisa in billion, but that's a pretty big stretch. Anyone have a suggestion for this 15mm coin? It is either very well hammered or a replica of a hammered coin.
Those medals (or similar ones) caught my attention at FUN also. I only looked & didn't ask about them any further. Congratulations on the interesting picked-up.
FUN Cordoba from Nicaragua - Photos taken using a hotel desk lamp. Here is a 1912 Nicaragua Cordoba that I purchased at the FUN show. Does anyone else at CT have this 1-Cordoba coin? It is about the size of a USA silver dollar. This example has some honest wear on it. (If it had less wear it would be a very expensive coin I think).
Yes, agreed. But a while ago I saw an exhibition about such propaganda pieces (mostly Goetz but a few others too), and so I knew ... or at least knew where to look for them. Creepy indeed. Christian
That looks unique, don't know much about it but I do find some medallions and commemorative coins really attractive.
I believe this to be a silver shooting medal. I don't really know that much about it, I just thought the design was fantastic. The warrior is expertly crafted with a wonderful hand, scale armor, and braid. I also like the expression on her face and the arrows landing in her direction. There is a touch of wear bit it doesn't bother me at all on this one, actually brings out some of the design. Thought you guys would like it. Matt
An interesting design indeed, also because of the high relief. As far as I can tell, it is a French medal; the signature "A. Morlon" most probably refers to Alexandre Morlon who also designed many French coins. Did a brief search and found this one; so yours may be from roughly the same time - early 1920s - as well. Christian
Really nice looking medal. The design looks good and so does the reverse. I'm guessing the blank spot is to engrave a name?
