What is your unicorn?

  1. That one coin, the one that you dream about. That one coin you may be able to afford someday, or one that you can afford but just haven't found the right one yet. The coin that you just have to have to feel like you have done something meaningful.

I have such a coin. There are two major keys in the series that I collect that most think about. The 1893-S and the 1904-S. I can find 1904-S coins with relative ease. They aren't cheap, but they are available. The 1893-S is a lot tougher in the grades I collect. But there is one coin in my series that just seems to stump a lot of collectors in problem free VF-AU. The 1905-O.

    So what is your coin?

Yes, the Key that is expensive. But, I just have not seen the one that has the circulated eye appeal that pleases me.

The one that I'll never get ahold of (True unicorn) Is the 1894-S Barber dime.
The one I see in my future: 1916-D merc.

Meiji trade dollar. Dragon is my nickname, I have about 7 of them in my skin. Way too many fakes of Asian coins though. A nice MS coin is 3-5k

The two key words in your question are "dream" and "afford".

For me there's no single coin in that category.
I've got 12 coins (copper and silver) from the 1790's that I want for my type set.
And I'm looking for at least VF.
Two I consider reasonably affordable; four more I consider marginally affordable.
The other six are waiting for me to win the lottery.
The two reasonably affordable ones are:
-- Flowing Hair Half Dime (1794-95) - probably the 1795 since it's the less expensive one
-- Draped Bust Half Dime/Small Eagle Reverse (1796-97) - all varieties appear to cost about the same

Any coin that would be a unique error... like a multiple strike capped die double denomination struck on wrong planchet coin.... or something like that. That would be awesome.:D

My unicorn for this year is to get a nice MS Canada 1947 Maple Leaf silver dollar.
So far I haven't seen an example that, a) looked good and b) I can afford!
But there is one out there for me and the thrill is in the hunt!

my unicorn would have to be a 1909-s VDB for my wheat cent collection. in fact, all of the 1909's are out of my budget.

An actual Jesse James silver dollar. Something with some provenance and a certificate of authenticity.
