I happend to come upon this in tonights Live Auction and it is a vignette that I have always admired. Not so rare that it cost a fortune but still accessable. I wanted to share it with you here as my first Obsolete purchase in almost 2 years. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. It is also a Proof from the ABNCo.
Very Nice, Congrats Rick, I like it too and Canandaigua is not too far (Less than an hour) from where I grew up.
Beautiful note, Rick, with an imprint I'd never seen before: Baldwin, Adams & Co., New York. A short-lived ABNCo predecessor that only lasted from 1851-54. I think that's a portrait of Henry Clay in the lower right.
Congratulations on your acquisition - I also watched last nights venue - the one lot I was interested in I missed out on because I got to my laptop about 5 minutes after it came up, but the other one, also a postbellum note, I did pick up.
is it me or what i am at a lost here. first off let me say that is a nice looking note, but you say its from ABN but their name is no where on it but the name of balwin is on it ?? this i do not under stand plus some one said that they (bladwin ) was short live? but i do have an old note from georgia. now i am not into notes like this and got this only because it is the only one i have ever seen that is the same on the back of the note but so old i can not make out the date (but looks to me like 1836). but if that is the right date it dose not fit what some one said about how long the company was working ?? now i also have an old note from the ABN company (not from the US) but it has no date any place on it so i think it may be a fake as it is from brizal can any one show some good links on these companys and their histroy thanks
American Bank Note wasn't formed until 1858, when seven smaller companies merged. So technically it's not an ABNCo note, but engraver George Baldwin went on to join Baldwin, Bald & Cousland in 1855. Part of that company merged into ABNCo a few years later. Not sure what I can say about your other notes, unless you want to post scans. ABN did produce many notes for Brazil, so yours may be genuine.
thank you for the info here are the scans of the two notes i was talking about again thanks for the info
gasalexan: Thanks for the calrification...I should have posted it that way in the beginning. Sorry to mislead or confuse anyone on this as it beame the property of the ABNCo at the merger.....as it is so stamped on the reverse.
