I have a 1915 Quarter Eagle that has been passed down as an heirloom for three generations. My mom kept it in the bottom of her jewelry box with various stuff sitting on top of it. To my untrained eye, it looks to be in pretty good shape, but when I took a couple of hi-res, close up photos of it, it shows some significant scratching. Here are the pics, what are your thoughts?
Beautiful coin you have there. That is one of the higher mintage quarter eagles so without it being in extremely good condition will not command any premium really. It does appear to have been cleaned which definitely hurts but I would say it has MS details and has not really been circulated. Nice coin to have in your collection and hopefully it will continue to be passed down! Oh and :welcome: to Cointalk! J
It has been handled very little. After I took these photos I put it in an AirTite capsule to protect it. It will be handed down to my oldest daughter when I die.
I agree -- mint state details or close, but harshly cleaned, possibly long ago. This kind of thing really does make a good heirloom; I still have the quarter eagle I inherited from my grandma.
