Had someone tell me they thought ANACS overgraded this one a bit... am curious as to what you thought it should grade. If need better pictures let me know, will try, but hard to get a decent scan or picture of something in a slab, lol. Was given the opinion that there's a "problem" with the date but I'm not seeing it.

Can you guess what ANACS graded this?

What grade do you think it should be?

"Liberty" is fully readable on the shield.

I'll bite and go VF-25. I have one in VG-10ish or F-10ish whatever it is :)

First one VF-25, maybe. Hard to say how much of "LIBERTY" shows on ribbon from the photo.

Second one, G-4 obverse, VG-8 reverse.

But I've been told I grade harshly.

All of it does... will see if I can scan it and have it show up better...

Edit: Well tried scanning it, and my scanner can't scan through the slab well, lol, the reflection off the plastic in the slab preventing me from getting a clear scan.

Pics I posted here were from the dealer I bought it from.

That's what ANACS said. Glad for multiple opinions though... especially with the reasons for those grading opinions.

That is a very nice coin.I have one of these that has a hole in it.I would like to get the Canadian 1858 20c.,
as that is a very unusual British Commonwealth coin,as is the New Brunswick & Newfoundland 20c. coins.

I just love obsolete denominations... and no US denomination is as short lived as this, lol (unless you count the $4 gold piece, but none were ever made with the intention to circulate). Still trying to find a decent 1/2 cent within my price range.

This one had the distinction of having a nice surface still, and still had decent detail remaining. It seems every other 20 cent piece I could find was either so worn down, you could barely tell it for what it is, or it was in such high condition it commanded a price higher than I could afford. This was perfectll in the middle. I try to get at least VF/EF coins to collect, if I can't afford or find that will usually pass. I do have a few slightly damaged coins that otherwise would have graded in the EF range... if I can still see the details well I don't mind a few minor scratches or even dents, if the coin in the same condition without the damage would otherwise be out of reach. No damage on this one though! It's one of my favorite pieces in my collection, bought it with a portion of my tax refund this year, lol.

As for grade I'd agree with the XF - probably 45. The date, I wouldn't say it's a problem, but it does look like a recut date 87/87.

The 2c. & 3c. coins are the other oddly-denominated U.S. coins that you'd be looking for.The silver 3c. Trimes are very difficult to find.

Do have the 2 cent... found one that has little wear though is very dark. Interesting thing about the 2 cent is that it was the first US coin to have the motto "In God We Trust" on it. Have a nickel 3 cent thouh not the silver one yet. Got the 3 nickel 3 cent when I was fairly new to coin collecting; before I saw it I had no idea that the coin ever existed, lol.

No one seemed to say what I was thinking-VF-30. Close with the VF-25's, but the reverse looks EF whereas the obv. looks VF maybe slightly better.

Do think the obverse looks better than the reverse... the reverse is a bit weakly struck, which seems to be a common thing with the 20 cent pieces. Maybe ANACS made an allowance for that when they gave this EF-40... the obverse is really good on an absolute scale, while the reverse is pretty good relative to how good the reverses usually are on these. The mintmark and the denomination are pretty weak on the reverse, but the eagle still has decent detail left in the feathers.
