I got my Coin World today, CD ad on p.12 has an odd item 1918/17-D nickel for $4950 in VF/ XF detail. They describe it as having folder gunk adhered to it ( whatever that is ? ). next sentence is: ""We have elected not to clean it." Sounds to me like that means their coins are admitedly normally cleaned, and this is an exception. It looks like a porous Fine to me. Their ad is always worth a laugh, only one side of the coin shown, no web photos.
Yikes! :rolling: Meanwhile, I have seen the word "porous" used elsewhere... what exactly does it mean... perhaps "weak," or "just barely"? I don't recall seeing that term used when I was last in coins. (Although, of course there was no public Internet then either!)
porous is not weak or barely, it's more a description of the surface as being granular, pitted, damaged. 1943 cents are often porous looking.
The 1818 quarter pictured beneath the nickel looks quite nice from the obverse picture. It's Borderline Uncirculated ( BU ? ) priced at $1495 which is AU-50 money. I wonder what's wrong with the reverse ? It's inexcusable to not have photos available, and stuff like overdates should be authenticated ( and graded). It's one thing to have a coin like a 21 Peace $ in circ. condition trading raw, you can't fake the coin by alteration, and I've never seen a cast fake, but higher end stuff should be slabbed. These guys sell key stuff like an 01-S quarter raw. ( and over-graded).
