That would be almost a 500% return on the original investment. Not too shabby!

I agree with you though Christian that the US is seeming too militaristic. This is one US combat vet who wishes we glorified our scientists, musicians, and inventors more than our military seems to get honored. Just because I put on a uniform does not mean I did more for this nation than Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, or Helen Keller. I wish the US got away from honoring dead presidents and military and honored Lady Liberty and the ideals she stands for.

    Just my view.

I'd like to see a Nikola Tesla commemorative. Although he wasn't born in this country, he did more for mankind than just about anyone else in history. So many of his inventions and ideas are still used today.

Turns out it was believed to have been a teacher's aid instead of the real deal, but it was interesting.

Yeah I saw that episode. Would have been awesome if that was really Tesla's prototype.

Should have done this a couple weeks ago, but you got me excited and I bought 2 of the PCGS First Strike coins. They had one left after mine. I thought I found a good deal at GovMint.com at $29, but they were the proof versions and I was looking for Uncirculated. Thanks for the HU.

the worst that would happen is that you would be stuck with a cool coin

Touche! Thats more than I can say about the first spouse gold coins. I dont really care how much they are appreciating. I think theyre ugly and I really cant understand who the market is for these coins. At lease with this half dollar it has excellent eye appeal to me.

NFN, but 4 days prior to the one in the OPs link sold for $73.00, one sold for $33.00, and a week prior one sold for $21.50. Correct me if I'm wrong but that shows the sale price is not stable, and the other two that sold were at a loss.

These were on sale at the Mint until Dec 16th, so now the market is trying to find the correct price. Now that people are realizing that this is the lowest mintage commemorative they are trying to get it before the price goes up too far. And I think the issue price was about $20.

the $21 probably sold while they were available at the mint- the $33 was sold before they popped up
    uncs that closed today:
    ms69 er ngc $84.95
    raw orig packaging $68.89
    ms69 er ngc $79.95
    yesterday raw orig packaging $73.00
they have a basic range they are in with a few out of that range (mostly to the upside)

If you read what I posted the one that sold for $21.50, sold a week prior to the one that sold for $73.00.

Weren't these released from the Mint prior to December?

EDIT TO ADD: Just checked the Mint's website, these were released Jan. 31, 2011.

Only 1 left. Looks like they raised the price again another $10 over night. Too rich for my blood over a gamble. Someone else can have it.

And someone else does now. Both are out of stock as of now. I bought 2 hoping for a good turnaround. Of course being an Army Vet in my 19th year of service (both active and NG) helps my interest in this coin. I almost bought the silver version when they released it but had to find some limits for my purchases this year.

I snagged up the last one yesterday afternoon around 2pm. Danr posted the link in the other "Army Commem" thread. Even at the price they were selling at, I feel like I got a good deal. It's going to stay in my collection, so what they sell for is insubstantial to me.
