Today I stopped by ANA Headquarters and dropped off my registration for Summer Seminar 2012. (I like to register early.) Continuing my eclectic interest in all things numismatic I signed up for the follow 5-day courses: Week 1 - Collecting Ancient Coins. This should be a very interesting course. The instructors are Kerry Wetterstrom (editor of The Celator) and David Vagi (director of Numismatic Guaranty Corporation Ancients). Week 2 - Flying Eagle and Indian Head Cents taught by Rick Snow. Each week I will also be taking a mini-seminar: Week 1 - Conder Tokens. This mini-seminar meets two nights and the instructor is Jerry Bobbe. Jerry specializes in coppers. Week 2 - The Byzantines: Their History and Coinage. This mini-seminar meets three nights and is taught by Prue Morgan Fitts (former ANA Governor and author). Does anyone else plan to attend Summer Seminar this year? Hope to see you there. 2012 Summer Seminar Course Catalog
I am still trying to get things squared away to take the week off. Hopefully soon. I don't want to wait another year. I attended the Counterfeit detection mini seminar at the September Long beach show, and it really lit a fire under me to get to Colorado.
Interesting selections Hobo. I doubt I would take the ancient course if I went, (Kerry is great, and David knows his stuff though I disagree with NGC), but I am not sure it would be terribly interesting for me. Prue teaching the Byzantine course would a good class. I have been meaning to go but my son will only be about 9 months old by then.
The full scholarship is airfare, tuition, room and board The partial is tuition. The scholarship application is very lengthy though, they defiantly make you work for it.
I took a look at it, and if I don't get a full scholarship, I am definitely going to have to save up Though air-fare wouldn't be horrible because I have "Connections" where I can get on for free. I am going to write my paper though even if I don't end up going. I am however, going to need some way to sway my parent's opinion on me being off somewhere alone.
Well you won't be alone unless you 18 and opt to be without supervision. You have chaperone the whole time. Make sure to tell your parents that. Its like a graduation/birthday present for me fortunately. Your going to have to fill out the short answer and the essays and get the rec letters, I hope you can get it! If you need any help let me know I have been studying it for the last month.
ANA Summer Seminar is very safe for YNs. Each year three or four dozen YNs attend Summer Seminar. Have your parents give Susan McMillan a call at ANA Headquarters. She can explain allay their concerns.
Sorry to dig up a relatively old thread, but I also am going to give the YN Scholarship a try. The Summer Seminar sounds like a lot of fun, and I don't want to wait another year to do it.
Good luck to the YNs in getting a scholorship. If you can go to Summer Seminar it will be an unforgettable experience. And the things you learn will help you the rest of your collecting life. Hope to see you there.
As a college student I have mastered the art of procrastination and not sent out rec letters or finished. Oh well I am going to go any way and by next year I am going to have a lot more to add, since I am now a Junior Board Member of my local club.
Those are two excellent choices. And I think you are wise to take them in that order. Bob & JP do a great job with the Counterfeit Detection course. (And they make it fun, too.) Send me a PM before you go so we can arrange to meet up - maybe at lunch one day.
Ok will do. I am think I am taking a lot the trips, but I am sure I'll find some time. I am getting pretty excited about it the more I think about it.
