Thoughts, opinions. I would like to know opinions on grades and value. I also had another thread listing all the other coins I had. If there were any other coins with key dates or any other coins that anyone would like to see let me know. I think the thread was titled 'my silver collection'. Hopefully the pictures are good enough.
VF25, IMO. The coin looks like it may have been cleaned at some point in its life, but a patina has formed nicely making the cleaning almost undetectable. Not too sure how a TPG would feel about it, though I recommend you submit the coin for certification anyways. This is the type of coin collectors are very suspicious of when purchasing because it's probably the most commonly-counterfeited Morgan Dollar out there. PCGS would be the best route to take for a coin of this calibur. :thumb: -Brian
TPG stands for third party grading service. basically you send it to a company and they check the coin for its authenticity and they grade it. they also guranty that the coin is real and thats why with key dates and anything higher valued you want to send it in so it will be easier to re-sell if it had been verified to be real by a professional grading service. i would recommend using either pcgs or ngc but if you cant find a dealer that will send it in for you, you can send it to anacs or icg as well but they are believed to be not as good as the top 2. for pcgs you have to be either a dealer or a member to submit coins. for ngc you have to be an ANA member. and you dont need any kind of membership for anacs. cody
The coin being raw, it's worth around $700... But if you were to certify the coin through PCGS and if it were to infact grade original, you'd be looking at a $1000+ coin. Like I said, collectors are very wary about purchasing coins like this raw. They'll pay through the roof to know that what they're buying is authentic, and authenticated by the top TPG none-the-less. -Brian
http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=3199&lot=1985 heres an auction for one that sold for 500 dollars and it was in an ngc slab graded g-6 which is a lower grade than yours. in the 2012 bluebook one in vf-20 is worth 750 so greysheet will be about 1100 or more is my guess and yes, we think it would be a wise decision to send the coin in. cody
To send it into the two top TGP I need to have a coin dealer send it in? I only know one dealer and he tried pretty much stealing this coin from me. I think I would find it extremely hard to hand my coins over to someone else to send it in, for obvious reasons. I dont plan on selling this coin but I would like it slabbed to prevent any further damage, to do so I would have to put complete trust in someone I dont know. Doesnt sound like to good of an idea..
If you wanna go through the outstanding prices to send it into PCGS yourself, it will be a pocket breaker, but there trustworthy people here that can help you by sending it in with their submissions at a cheaper price.
About how much money would it cost to send it in myself and how much for others to do it with their submissions? I just need a price range, not exact numbers if people dont like to give exact prices out.
For PCGS you need to be a member, and pay this much http://www.pcgs.com/howtosubmit.html Then you gotta pay submission and if you scroll down they show you the service prices in the coin category. Economy grading is your best bet, then forward and return postage/insurance, and then your coin is graded and slabbed in about a month.
NGC (#2 TPG) in order to submit yourself, you gotta become a member or be a member of the ANA and the submission fees are slightly lower. Many may not recommend this service, ANACS, but it is 3rd in the 4 top tier grading companies, but is a lot cheaper. http://www.anacs.com/contentPages/Services.aspx But you don't have to become a member or any of that, cheaper with a 5 coin minimum for the economy, but their grades aren't horrible. Usually are pretty accurate. I have faith in them. Edit: ANACS has a max value of $500 per coin submitted, you'd have to submit it in the 15-Day service for the biggest bang for your buck.
Becoming a member of anything besides this amazing website doesnt seem to interest me. I only have about 50 to 75 coins, all but three dont need grading due to the common dates and average condition. I also dont often aquire new coins so buying a year membership probably isnt in my near future. I have never paid more than 20 dollars for a coin so I definately have a problem with refusing to pay extreme prices due to funds. That has been changing as of recently so hopefully I'll be getting into it more.
If you don't want to pay the fees for membership, I'd reccomend finding a dealer on this forum, or going to a respected dealer nearby to submit through them, or send to ANACS.
Okay, I'll look into it. I'm going to post pictures of all my other coins tomorrow to see what everyone thinks. Mainly all silver dollars but a few others including a large cent from 1803. We'll talk more tomorrow. Goodnight everyone. Thanks for all the help. Oh, can anyone tell me why I have such a hard time signing in sometimes? Am I the only person this happens to? I'll type the screen name and password and it will thank me for logging in and when it takes me to the next page I wont be logged in. Thanks.
Does anyone else that was sleeping last night have opinions on grades and values on this coin? Did igradeMS70, cciesielski01 and Cazkaboom hit the nail on the head? I just thought their would be more thoughts on grades. Thanks.
