while digging in an old house today i found a metal tin full of capped bust half dollars and a $1 bust coin. i have no time to take pictures or get any of the close up information at the moment but assuming that they are all in fine or better condition and no holes etc. nice mix of dates. what would be a ballpark figure to offer for these type of coins. I have always wanted to own one and wouldnt mind offering to buy one of them while i have the chance. ebay completed listings would suggest that maybe around $40-$60 for the halfs ? i am no expert and am just starting to get into collecting so any help would be appreciated.

Without pictures its unanswerably sadly. Condition is critical for coins. We don't know if these are real, what grade, if they have damage, etc etc. Anyone who would throw out an answer for you is simply guessing.

If you had to have an answer, $40 to $60 buy price would be for undamaged halves grading F-VF. If you believe you can tell a forgery from an authentic coin, can grade properly, and can make sure they are undamaged you would be ok at that price. If you cannot tell those things with 100% certainty, then you are taking a sizable risk sir.

Cazkaboom One for all, all for me.

Saying the person doesn't know much about coins, I'd offer to verify they are real first. Photos, dealer, whatever to make sure they aren't fake.

the owner passed away, i am employed doing estate sales and these were found with a massive hoard of coins in an old 3 story house. the family that is in control of the estate now doesnt know anything about them just the attitude of sell them for as much as possible so we have to try and verify on our own and sell them for the family. fortunately a ton of the coins were ordered from the mint and still have receipts on the boxes. I will work on getting a picture of these tomorrow but for now here is a pic of all the coins in the boxes loaded up in the jeep.

Probably not a smart idea to post your personal phone number in a public forum...

    Just sayin'.

I am also creating a youtube video to assist you in properly sorting out this massive lot. I'll post, or PM you the link upon completion. At a bare minimum pick up a greysheet or redbook price guide, so you don't get taken to the cleaners.

for everyone interested, as of now the coins are not for sell. we have not even sorted through them I was just wanting to show a picture of how many there are and inquire about the capped busts specifically.

Completely understandable. I respect your decision entirely. Take things slow... Understand what you're dealing with here. Have your coins appraised with your local coin dealer, and us here at CT will assist you in the appraisal as well. Hopefully we'll be able to tell you exactly what you've found, and what the possible cumulative value may be.

Depending on the dates and conditions of the coins you speak of, the value may creep into the tens of thousands of dollars, though I don't wanna get your hopes up. ;)
