U.S. Mint sales of the 2011 Medal of Honor Commemorative Coins begins today at 12 noon. I really like reverse design of the $5 Gold coin that features the full figure of Minerva, holding a shield and Union flag; along with a field artillery cannon and wheel of the Civil War era. This reverse design might be one of my favorites designs of the modern commemorative era. (I am not that fond of the obverse though.) I think they should have flipped it and made the reverse the obverse design. I think this coin contains about 1/4 oz of gold? So melt value is around $350. The coin is selling for about $450 ... $100 over melt.
agree ... shield is too big ... twice the size of the flag was a mistake ... still a nice design (IMO)
My personal opinion is that the coin is very nice. I did happen to purchase the Unc version of this and thought it's design was exquisit. Anyone know the final mintages for this commem? Thank you.

Hmm... I actually appreciate the Obverse more than the reverse. The MOH should be represented by something involving WW2. Perhaps Iwo Jima, Normandy. I don't like the lady liberty/large shield/ or the cannons. It just doesn't make sense to me. JMHO. It is still a very nice coin, but I don't understand the symbolism on the reverse.
I really loved it too. I couldn't afford the gold commem...but I did buy the silver proof. I wish I could have picked up the gold...but just too spendy for me right now.
