this set is worth a grand - that is the floor. Once you hold one and open it up you can clearly see that it is the finest coin set ever produced by the US Mint.

I think the OP wants to get an idea of what you paid from a secondary market source, other than the U.S. Mint; i.e. from a seller on eBay, or a dealer, etc.

FYI, if you open the set from the Mint, don't bother submitting it to either TPG. It must remain sealed in the original shipping box directly from the mint.

I believe this set is currently worth $700-$750 both raw or slabbed based on the current market. That is what the set is selling for. I think it will remain at these prices for a while and I don't expect it to crash. I agree completely with the following statement:

There is no way an open set is worth the same as a slabbed set, if you opened the set it is worth 3 ounces of silver + A pretty box + The price of two high mintage "key" coins...You basically ruin the set when you open it. The two "keys" will be worth about $125-$175 each graded 69-70

High mintage? Tell that to all the people who want them and don't have them right now. It's the second lowest production they've ever had.

Look at the sales history. Raw sets in their original (opened) boxes are selling nearly as high as slabbed sets. The reason is...50% of the sets are grading 70 and 50% are grading 69 and nothing is lower. So, the slabbed premium is minimal.

I'll always want five more ounces of silver too.

The reason why is the price is still 100% speculation and hype. You will never be able to prove 3 of those coins are even part of the set....If what you think is true you should have sent your set off and got them all slabbed, than bust open the two keys put them back in the box and replace the other 3 with ASE that didn't even come with the set, then you would have a open complete set plus the 3 non keys slabbed.

I believe if you did not get one of these sets directly from the mint, the only way to purchase one now is certified by PCGS or NGC. You can get a 69 set for about the same as a raw set. Seems to me on the secondary market, the chances of these coins being cherry picked is high and you may be left with someones rejects unless you know the dealer and trust them.

True, there are 3 common coins in the set but they are part of this set and supposedly these particular coins were minted specifically for this set (read that somewhere) but who knows. I an not sure that matters anyhow

I look at it this way, the 70 sets in NGC are selling for about the same as the 20th anniversary set in a 70 grade, with about 40% of the mintage with 2 main coins as apposed to one for the 20th anniversary set. Seems to be an imbalance now but as my boss said "what do I know" :smile

    The reverse proof is awesome.

Just my thoughts and I am sticking to it

My worst silver eagle is in a MS70 slab. As far as the grading companies go, I don't trust their little opinions. I must confess though, it took me a day and a half to open the box and not send it off to be graded. Something about monetary value, but once I got past that I found some really nice coins. I know this is a minority opinion here, but a really nice PF70 is a really nice PF70 and I don't care what box it came out of. I tend to buy raw. Maybe I should start a slab grading company. We'll grade the slabs for clarity, squareness on the coin mount, and assign values to the labels based on hype.

I can't vote I got them for $299.95 but I would acculate if it dips to $500.
Guuna How much is the 2006 Reverse Proof with more then twice the mintage?

Except you can't do that if you're going to submit them and get them slabbed as a set, and expect any notation on the label of First Strike or Early Release. They have to be sent off to the TPG in the original shipping box the Mint sent them to you in.

    Unopened.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. But, the 2006 has remained very strong since the day it was released. Sure, it dipped a little (both slabbed and raw)...but the mintage was also much higher. The fact that so many are coming back graded 70s illustrates the supreme high quality of ASEs minted this year. Even if the 3 non-key coins didn't come with the set...who cares, the quality is the same. I'm perfectly happy with my raw set (straight from the mint just like I got it) and would not want them slabbed. Plus, the fee required to get them slabbed isn't worth the very slight (if any) premium you get.
