you can try the for sale section, e-bay, coin shop, pawn shop, hang on to them, pass them on to yn/relative.
If I were to sell my collection I'd probably try selling it to other collectors that would appreciate my obsession! LOL... As mentioned, you can try the “For Sale” part of this forum; go to a dealer, pawn shop, or eBay. I personally don’t know if I’d sell anything on eBay, as I don’t think it’s worth it as a seller when you look at the listing fees, sale fees and PayPal fees plus you still have to deal with the some questionable sellers. Anyway, good luck with whatever you chose to do, just be aware that you will regret getting rid of your collection. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but you will regret it!
Without knowing your reasons for wanting to sell, I can only suggest you hang on to it if at all possible. You described it as meager but I would hazard a guess that it is mostly not a few coins might be hugely meaningful while hoard of them can be less so. Be well and good luck! -L
Thanks Guys I am approaching 60 and looking to down size all the stuff I have accumulated and maybe pay off my house in the process. I am sure there are no real $$ gems in my collection just things I have found over the years that I thought interesting or as in the case of my recent find, were given to me. I may take pics and post them here. I do not trust coin shop dealers. I have been in a few when someone was selling "Grand dads collection and seen how the owner lowballed them to get the collection. Much like the idiot on Pawn Stars. I understand they have to make money too, but lieing to a seller isn't right either.I am going to think it over but when and if I do I will post it here. Mike
I would recommend listing here in the classifieds as well. If you go to ebay, you're going to lose 12% off the top. So you can list them here for that much less, which is a much more attractive price to buyers, and still get the same money you would have got on ebay. Minus the protection, of course.
I may post them here in the classifieds and let any of you make me an offer. best offer takes it. I plan to sell them individually should someone just want one of them but would take best offer on the lot too. Mike
Yes, that happens. But what happens even more often is that the dealer is actually making a fair offer. The seller just doesn't realize it. Collectors may spend their entire lives putting together their collections. But the vast majority of them end up being collections with common date, common grade (usually low grade) coins. And the coins really aren't worth much when it comes down to it. Usually they are even worth less than what the collector paid for them. Because for every one of those common date, mid or low grade coins in your collection, that dealer already has 10 or 15 of them in his inventory. And he's offering to sell them for the same amount, or less, than what you the collector want him to pay you for your coins. Of course if you walked in there and just offered him the keys and semi keys from every series you own, you'd get offered what you thought was a fair price. But then you're stuck with everything else that you can get nothing, or almost nothing, for. And trying to sell your collection to other collectors, rarely does that work. Those other collectors already have the same coins you have, they don't want them either. The only coins they want are the keys and semi keys - just like the dealer. And if it took you a lifetime to assemble that collection, it will also take you a lifetime to sell it to other collectors for that reason. So rarely is selling to other collectors a viable option when push comes to shove. It may sound harsh, but that is reality. And I'm sorry, but reality is harsh.
List them in the for sale section. I'd love to see what you have. I'm sure someone on this forum would be interested.
My main hobby interest and business is plastic models. I now suport me and my Son on this. I fully understand buying collections. I buy model kit collections from time to time. I look at what they want to sell and make an offer I can afford. They take it or they don't. Model airplane kits are a bit different in that they have or had a retail value. When someone dies and left the family a few thousand model kits getting retail that Dad paid isn't going to happen. Like I said I doubt I have any real valuable coins just ones I liked or were handed down or I found on the ground even. I think you guys as fellow collectors would have more interest and be more likely to be fair. Probably the only valuable coin I have a a 1909 VDB Lincoln and it may be worth $25.00?I don't expect to get rich off what I have and have no high expectations. Mike
Best of luck with turning a buck. Like someone else here said, if you can, just hang on to them if you don't think you would make anything worthwhile. Years down the road you might be happier. Good luck anyway.
I don't agree with the statement. It all depends on what they have. Collections are vastly different from one to the next. Besides the fact that anything with precious metals in it purchased before 2001 can easily be re-sold for a hefty profit right now. Besides the fact that there are highly graded and toned coins out there that have a one of a kind, unique look to them. They don't have to be key dates. Somebody will be interested and you can probably get your money back out of them if you didn't over pay when you bought them. There's always somebody just getting in that doesn't have much yet. There's always somebody looking to add to their collection. If you have common coins then you probably don't have much in them to lose anyway.
Of course there are exceptions, but I'm talking about generalities here. The average collector has various sets, some complete and some not, usually in albums or folders, where most of the coins vary in grade from G to XF, with a few AU and MS examples thrown in. I'm also basing my comments on a lifetime of experience and the thousands of stories, that describe the situation I have described, that have been posted right here on this and other coins forums for as long as forums have existed. Out of all of the collectors that I have ever known in my entire life, only a small handful have ever made a profit on their coin collections.
Hey man, no worries. You didn't hurt my feelings. I understand fully your oint. As I said I have run into similar in my hobby/business so I know what you are talking about. I do not expect to make a huge profit but many of these coins in my collection were given to me since childhood or I found them in change, on the ground or with the metal detector so anything would be profit. I know I am not getting rich off them were I to sell all. Thanks for your input, Mike
