WWI German coins

    I've been collecting some 1916 to 1920's German pfennings from my coin shop in town that i go to. i was wandering what yall could tell me on the values and just a little info about them please. they are in poor to good condition and i am finding them in the 3 for a $1 box of forign coins. is this a good deal, bad deal, or fair price? oh, and what are they made of? thanks guys, and sorry for not postin in a while

    Sounds like a fair price to me, silver lite and bright aluminum. gray and heavy zinc. or just brass.

    German coins from that era are pretty interesting. One thing I notice is that by 1917-8 the German mints got a bit sloppier on quality so errors that were not previously available start in earnest by that time. Somewhere I have a 1918 50rpf or half mark that has a neat little die crack on it. It is a bit of a curiousity also because it was still being struck in silver, whilst many of the smaller denominations were getting struck in iron by then. Very soon it's silver value eclipsed it's nominal value and it was hoarded by the family that brought it to America in 1920, then gave it to my father in law in the 1960's.
