Well Actually there is no laws prohibiting the production of fake coins, but they are required by law to to say "copy" somewhere or another
after asking here i decided to get the "war" nickel checked out. i found a coin dealer on craigslist and contacted him. i told him i didn't really know anything about coins but i found this nickel lying around, and i told him what you guys said about "war" nickels and this date being wrong and he said he would check and verify the coin for me if i sent it to him. he said it was impossible to tell from pictures and he needed the coin actually in front of him to check it out. i mailed it to him today and hopefully will find out in a few days when he gets it. i will let you all know if it is real or worth anything.
Anybody got a book called "The Coin Collector's Survival Manual"? I believe it was mentioned there... Leftover silver alloy planchets struck in 1946. No war nickel reverse die, my bad. I can't find it because I don't have the book on me. Anybody?
umm why would you send it to a complete stranger, nonetheless someone from craiglist, I doubt you will see the coin again if it is real.
Don't do it!!!! There are other people, who are honest and dependable with error coins I'd prefer to send them to. I hope you didn't send it out to this guy.
it was to a coin dealer so i'm sure it is fine. his ad was to buy silver coins for his shop. its not like i sent it to just some guy haha. he has a shop so he won't steal it or anything. shop owners hate thieves haha.
i already sent it this morning. he said he could tell if it was real so he is a professional. i will let everyone here know what he says when he gets it in a few days and lets me know. maybe someone here can buy it if it is real haha.
Maybe it's just me being pessimistic but...... I wouldn't trust anyone from craigslist....I wouldn't send a potentially valuable coin to someone I didn't know.... and what proof do you have if you get your coin back and it's not the same one you sent? Good luck. I hope it works out.
ok so the dealer got my nickel. he messaged me and told me i shouldn't have shipped it in an envelope haha. he says the nickel is silver because of its gravity test and weight but because it is worn out and also has the wrong date on it it is worthless except the silver. i asked what about what you guys said that it might be valuable and he said it wasn't and the wrong date means no collector is going to want it. he says its not worth the cost to send back to me and he refuses to return it but he will pay me $5 because of the silver in it to be fair. he wants my paypal information so he can pay me $5. i said i didn't want to sell it and i wanted him to send it back now and he refused and said if i didn't accept his payment i wouldn't have gotten as much from anyone else since it is so worn and if i didn't accept his payment i would be "abandoning" my claim to the nickel rather than selling it so i should accept his money. he refuses to return it and he says since it is costs him more to ship it than it is worth he doesnt have to send it back it is "just junk silver" he said. he says he is being nice since i am new to coins so he is paying me a lot more than the nickel is worth because i am new. should i accept the payment? i dont know who to complain to. does the coin collecting community have a security or police for this kind of thing and can get it back if i make a complaint or something? i am kind of upset. actually i am really upset haha.
Lol... sorry, SORRY, I KNOW it is not funny, but I have a BAD case of the giggles imagining coin-collector police I keep imagining a new reality TV show where they go around arresting people for destroying the value of a rare coin, or for using grandpa's morgan dollars to buy an ice cream cone... LOL! In all seriousness, this REALLY sucks. Are we allowed to name and shame in this forum? Perhaps Julie should post the name, address, and email of the "dealer"? Julie - that guy is trying to rip you off. If your coin is a legitimate mule, it is worth a LOT, even in worn condition. It is quite possibly unique, if real, and error collectors WILL be interested. This guy is trying to make you accept his payment, in my opinion, to show it as a legal purchase if questioned later. If he really is a dealer, I have no doubt that this coin will show up on the market somewhere, or be sent in for grading or something. Is there any way WE can warn PCGS and other grading companies to be on the lookout for this stolen coin? This ladies' inexperience is being taken advantage of by a real slimeball, and it is making my blood boil... there must be some steps that can be taken?
Who is this dealer I want to know, I got a bunch of silver nickels that I can sell him for $5.00 a piece.
I would get the police involved. Is this guy close enough for you to go visit? Or, offer to send him a stamped return mailer. If the coin is real it is valuable. That crap about it being only worth silver value because of the "wrong date" is absurd. Even if it is fake it might well be a Henning nickel and worth at least $20. Do NOT let this idiot get away with stealing your coin. (And isn't there a way to give someone a bad rep on CL?) . Keep those messages from him as evidence - he is trying to defraud you.
