I am loking to purchase a 2011 70 set 1400.00. Think I should wait? Also what should I look for to protect myself from getting ripped off. Novice, but want to purchase, would I be better off going to a local coin show? Also people are telling me to purchase an ungraded set , rather then a graded which is alot cheaper. Thanks for your thoughts. Jim
Are you talking about the 70 sets for all US PROOF coins in 2011? Please do NOT buy it at 1400! You are losing too much money.
Sorry, just realized that you are talking about the 2011 American Eagle Set I believe the 25th anniversary set???

I would not buy a 25th anniversary set of American Eagles in certified holders graded Mint State 70 at all. I have never purchased any certified coins in 42 years of collecting. I would recommend making a purchase of the set for no more than $700 at this time. Do not rush the purchase. Look at auction trends on eBay and adjust the price to paid based on activity. I would recommend reading the copious discussion about these sets right here on Coin Talk. One of our Coin Talk members has also been publishing price trends for this set right here for all to see. You will find this information of tremendous interest and VERY helpful.
I agree with this statement to a certain degree. I don't think the 70s are going to carry a large premium over the 69s or even the raw coins in the long run. So many are grading 70. That said, the anniversary set is a beautiful set and I believe it is a set that will hold it's value...unlike many of the mints recent products.
You guys are right. Ya see how many sealed boxes came back with all "70" designations? Lots. And if not a 70 than mainly "69". Frankly, I'm of the mind that you don't certify modern bullion. Just tryin' to split hairs on otherwise common coins. I don't buy it. The two keys to the set basically drive the value of it. Bender, if I may make a suggestion? Buy the set "raw". In all likelihood you'll get marvelously well struck beautiful coins. Who needs the blasted numerical designations on these. I certainly don't, and neither do you........unless, however, you collect slabbed ASE's. Personally I'm satisfied with OGP. And welcome to the forum dear fellow........
I agree with a couple of the post above. Graded 69's and OGP's for the most part have been selling second market for about the same amount of money. Unless you are a registry set person or are looking to sell them via some online medium where grading is an issue for buyer/seller protection or authenticity then OGP is probably better. I would leave them OGP too not break them out for albums, flips, etc just in case any future owner would want to spend the extra dough to certify them. 70's are a funny thing. Owners of them expect the world because of the misconception of premiums and "perfect" coins. It goes back to two steadfast coin collecting maxims. Buy the coin not the packaging, and secondary market price is set by what people are willing to pay for the coins. Some buy into the pedigree's, 70 grades and will over pay for that prestige other's say hey the coin is worth this take it or leave it.
if you have that much to spend get 2 raw sets in OGP for around that or less. I think they have more upside and you get 2 sets for a bit less money, win win.
People are going to tell you to buy the raw ungraded coins because the premiums for 70's can be outrageous. Ultimately it really comes down to what you want, which is what everyone here is going to tell you also. To be honest though, I don't think paying the premium for the 70's now is all that bad, because if you ever decide to sell your set you will be able to sell it with a premium. It works both ways. If I had the money and wanted it enough I would probably get a 70 set. With such a low mintage I believe the value of the set is only going to go up. Those are my thoughts on the matter, don't let them make or break your decision.
Should you wait? You mean to get a better price down the road? Maybe. But I don't think the set will tumble much more. If you're ready, go for it. Not sure why you think you might get ripped off. Particularly if you're buying slabbed MS70 ASE's. But even if you were buying ungraded. As long as you know the set and its market value you'll be fine, wherever you buy. Put me in the column preferring ungraded over slabbed. The 70 vs 69 game, slab label ploys, PCGS is better than NGC. It's inane. Lance.

Bender, I agree with most of the posts. Btw, $1400 I believe is too much for a 70 set even if that is what you wanted. I am biased since I have some sets I will be selling, but I am not expecting to get $1400 for a 70 set. I do see all sets starting to bottom out now, so if you want a set, (raw, 69, 70), I think it may be a good time to get whatever type you want. Again, for full disclosure, I will be in the market to sell some, so take my advice with a grain of salt. Chris
Why? You can get a set, 69 D/UCAM for less money and they look just as great as the 70, and IMHO, look better than the 70.
FYI, Great Collections. com has a 70 set as a today's special for $1290 no buyers fee. if you want to go for the graded 70 set
