Saw this up for sale and thought what a shame it was cleaned so badly... I'm guessing there would be no way to salvage it at all.. What about for a type set though?
Why not? Listen, its your collection. You collect what you like. ALl of the talk about cleaned coins and the like here is to simply make sure people understand what they are buying and relative values. I would never say that a coin like this is not collectible, not in a million years. As long as you like it, and am aware of what it is so pay appropriately, go for it. Chris
True, I think I was just wondering what others thought about how badly the surfaces may be marred from the images. I think the price is about normal for an AU Details based on heritage, teletrade and the like..
Personally I would go for a whiter example. The only trade dollar I own was cleaned. I just picked it up out of boredom one day to have a type. It was just overdipped, though, with no scratches. It all what you like, but if it were the same money I would go with one without as many scratches as this one appears to have. For the scratches I would want a discount.
Good point on the scratches. The ones I looked at as far as auctions realized had better examples of AU details coins that looked much nicer field ways. At some point I do want one for a type set and may go for a problem free xf example if I can find a nice one.
Not attractive to me. If you love it, go for it. But rarely will a marginal coin grow in fondness. Buy one you will always enjoy. And stick to slabbed ones unless you really know the T$ series. They are among the most counterfeited coins of all time. Lance.
I'm passing on it also, I just think for the money I could find a slightly lower grade problem free coin for a type set... This one is slabbed by NGC and believe me, this would be one item I would never buy raw due to all the fakes out there...
Good decision. Don't settle. This one was only a couple hundred bucks. Keep looking and be patient. You'll find one you like. Lance.
Wow, that is a great coin.. I know I will need one for the type set along with an earlier dollar which will be even more expensive...
