1964 nickle of great intrest, warning im a noob

start off by saying i know i should search ahead of time and i have for about a week
but couldn't find any conclusive information in either direction so i come to you guys for
information to hopefully clear things up

start with a story
i work at target and it was the holiday season recently as we all know and people do alot of shopping paying
little or no attention to nothing other than what their getting and what it cost not the actual currency used....
well i start my shift the other day and as always the register was a mess so i start sorting the coins to all the dimes are with dimes quarters and quarters u get the idea well
as im doing such i see a penny in the nickles but don't pay much attention to it just throw it in the open slot for rolls of change to refill the drawer to keep it from
being given out and listening to a customer (guest) complain for whatever reason its not as good as a shiny nickle
well short story made long it eats at me all day so i buy it out of the register at the end of my shift (boss did the transaction as to not even appear to be stealing or anything like that)
get home and realize it looks like its made of copper and i says 1964 is the year
ok cool but on top of that there is no mint mark (i think thats what it's call the p or d for where it's made)
also the coin has an odd rim to it that is just a hair thicker than a regular nickle,but the rest of the coin seems a hair thinner
and all the features are really soft as in not nearly as detailed as a normal nickle to point of jefferson not even having his ponytail
im going to make an account so i can upload the pic or if someone wants i can email a pic to them and go from there?

just wondering if theres any chance this is a real copper nickle and if so whats a real 1964 copper nickle worth (high to low baised on condition i understand one number is impossible based on non of u seeing the coin yet) i know this is pretty pedestrian but ive seen values range from $12 to thousands and i don't know much about coins or who to trust on the subject

just asking about the viability of that i think i might have being what i think it might be and should it be as such
what would an estimated value from barely noticable as a nickle to edited forum rules perfect mint condition

Welcome to the forum. In 1964, the 5 cent coin that was made in Denver and would have a D on it. The coins made in Philadelphia, had no letter ( no P) and included almost 4 million proofs and over 1 billion business strikes ( regular type). It sound as if you might have come upon a proof coin that has toned. I have seen them with a yellow or orange toning that could be such. Also the edges of the proof coin is very square ( right angle) and not beveled like a regular nickel. This might make the rim appear to be thicker. This is all guess work from your description, so photos would be necessary. I prefer to put my photos on Photobucket and then use the icon in the reply box that looks like a picture in a frame ( 3rd from right ) to load. Even if it is a proof , the value would not be much as they were so many made.
