I was at an auction tonight and was looking through a pile of wheats. I had all my money spent or I would have bought it. It was a 1914-D. However there appeared to be a gap between the 19 and the 14, with the D almost in between the 19 and the 14. I know the 1914-D is a key date, but would that of been an alteration, or an error?
From the position of the date as you describe it, could have been any date. It sounds like the last two digits are both moved over. A clear pic would be nice.
I don't think Detecto can get a pic because he is not the owner. I agree with Kasia, 1944-D filed the 4 to a 1
Thanks for the info. Ya it did not look right, so I did not buy it. I don't think it is possible at all for the date to space out any.
Upon examination, did you seem to find any scratching on it, maybe raw exposed metal? Though it could've easily been re-toned using molasses.
