I am not a buyer or seller but was hoping to find out some information for my father who has coins that have been passed down to him through a few generations. We have mint/or near mint $5 Liberty head coins in the years 1849,1861,1880,1881,1886,1899,1900,1901,1904,1909,1878 and 1914. I also have an Indian head gold coin from 1909, 2 silver nickles from 1899 and 1908 and two big dollar coins from 18(something...worn) and 1922 (they are in bad shape. The Indian head and the gold coins look almost new. I have no idea how much these are worth and everywhere on the internet tells you something different - plus there are different grades like AU50, AU53 etc). I'm afraid to take them to a shop - in fear someone would not be honest. Thank you for any numbers you can give me or a good website to look it up.

Need to see the coins (decent pictures) to have any idea of value. I would put the photos on photobucket and then add the IMG links to a post here at CoinTalk.

Okay, I got all the pictures on Photobucket but I'm unsure how to post them...should I do each one individually (if not - tell me how)? I think this is how I do one:

perfect, that's how you do it, need shots of the reverse too. The reverse has the mint mark which will also be very important.

I would suggest to paste the links for each coin in the same post

You will need to keep the Obverse and reverse together on the same page so that the coin can be matched to a date, mint mark, and approximate grade. Some of the reverses you showed are clearly circulated while a couple look like they are mint state. It will take time but this is the only way to determine an approximate value.

I flipped the coins over so they are in the same order....or do I need to put pictures together? I'll have to figure that out....:) thanks for your time with this

You are good. The 1849C if real is an expensive coin even in the condition shown.

Yup, definitely over the $1500.00 mark likely. Only 64,823 minted.

The V nickels are not silver, but nickel. Both look to be in about Fine condition, so each about $5 range, maybe a little more if VF condition.

The 1922 Peace dollar I'd say is worth about melt value, $20-$25.

The Morgan (the other large dollar) is the same, since it's damaged and not even in Good condition, I wouldn't even pay melt value for it, maybe tops would be $20 bucks.

The 1909 Indian Gold is very common, being a D mint (3,423,560 total minted, highest in the series). I'd say in it's condition you can easily get $400 or more for it in value.

thank you so much, he'll be happy to know he has something of worth to pass on.... I love coins but have not gotten into the actual collecting rare ones. I like to get coins from many different countries - not a lot of money in it - but very interesting. Thank you for your time - have a very Happy New Year!

The gold ones are definitely gonna be worthy of passing on, not so much of the others, that's value wise. Keep'em all though if they've been in the family for quite some time though, sentimental value makes them worth a whole lot more. ;)

The three coins I might get graded are the 1949, 1909D and the 1903 $2 1/2 by either PCGS or NGC. The value on these three (based on what Rodeoclown stated) may go up if they grade well. I would guess around $450 on the other gold $5s and around $325 on the 1878.

    Best Regards

The 1849-C Half Eagle was minted at the Charlotte Mint. That 'C' mintmark makes this coin valuable to collectors. This coin alone should be worth $1,500 or more depending on how it grades out.

And, Stan, it may go without saying but I will say it anyway:

    DO NOT CLEAN THOSE COINS!!
