Would love to hear some thoughts on this 1853 dime... grade, tone, value or anything you might want to share...

    Thanks,
I was not sure if it would hit an AU grade of some type.. I'm not accustomed to grading these.. I know it is a common date... Starting to look at filling a nice type set.

    Any others have thoughts?

Don't think it's quite an AU example. Details are solid, and the strike is great, but there's still visible wear in secondary places.

May have a chance at XF45, but I think there's a bit too much wear on Lady Liberty's upper-head.

Either way, it's a good lookin' dime, and in this case, that single grade doesn't make much of a difference on the coin's value. :)

I liked it as well, though I suppose I will be letting it pass as the seller is looking at AU money.. Aah well, will keep looking around..........
    Thanks!!

    I'll go AU-55 maybe 58. Nice coin.

Really? What draws you to that conclusion if I can ask?

OK, I'll just go AU-55. I'm saying that because that's what I feel from the image. I might change my opinion from a different image. I do worry a bit about what a TPG would have to say. PCGS would probably kick it back as Altered Surfaces. The image has that look to me, but again it's an image. Is it raw and what is the dealer asking.

It's raw and the dealer is asking 150.00 and calling it AU53. I wasn't trying to change your mind, I was just curious on what you saw that made you feel that way. I sort of figured mid to upper AU as well

I think it has a shot at a low AU grade as well. There seems to be enough detail left, especially on all the rays of the stars.

By the way, it's listed as a half dime, not a dime. That changes it's over all value.

I'm on the border with this one. XF-45 strong - Au weak. The only thing that is distracting to me is the tarnish to the rim along the 3-6 oclock on the reverse.

Thanks for the site, I will have to check that out in more detail.

Overall, based on everything stated in this thread, I'm feeling it falls more in the 35-45 range which according to the NumisMedia guide falls a good way below the asking price. It is a nice dime but, not sure the price is good based on it being a more common date....

Die 107-a has a die cud on the reverse, the one I was looking at doesn't show that diagnostic. I don't think it's that one if I am reading the site correctly. Great site by the way!!
