PCGS vs. NGC on speed of order entry

I have sent a lot of orders into NGC, invariably when they pick up the priority or express shipment to them in the morning, the order is almost always entered by the end of the day.

With PCGS the story is different. I overnighted a package to them that arrived on Friday morning, still no confirmation of order entry--yes, I realize it was a big holiday weekend, but PCGS closed early on Friday; also with NGC any customer service person you talk to is able to do what you want done with an order if there are any problems; not so with PCGS in my experience. Any snafus in the order, and there is a delay until that gets straightened out.

    Any others have this experience?

It's not just because of the holidays, but you also have to consider that they are getting prepared for the FUN Show in Florida. There always seems to be a rush for some people to want to get submissions in, not only to beat the holidays, but to beat FUN as well. I've always tried to avoid submitting to anyone between Thanksgiving and FUN. Besides, I usually deliver my submissions to FUN because I'm only two hours away.

So far that is my experience as well. So I sent some in that arrived there on the 9th. Some shipments were economy, others regular. Do you think I will get them before mid January?

I have had a similar experience with PCGS -- it often takes them a few days to get it in their system. Longer during holidays or when a show is going on.

Oddly enough, the coins didn't seem to mind. ;)

I'm sure security is #1 with them, so the arduous procedure of doing everything by the book and expeditiously is the problem. The biggest concern is having coins lost or stolen so as long as that does not happen we are ahead of the game. If I had any voice with them I would say copy everything NGC does well in customer service.

By all accounts NGC does have superb customer service.

That said, I choose to send my coins to PCGS.... ;)

And for all the bad things I've read about PCGS customer service, my two interactions with them -- both face-to-face at shows -- was remarkably good. The third time (actually the first) was through a dealer, and again, I had no issues (except they refused to slab my St. Gaudens lol).

Then again, I didn't stress over every website update -- how long this takes, or how long that takes -- and just waited (patiently) for the e-mail that the coins were done.

I have found, however, that patience, when it comes to coin collectors, is not common. So what works for me may or may not work for you. :)

    Have fun....Mike

Agreed, your points make a lot of sense.

But you do pay for PCGS holdering, sometimes with longer turn-around time, sometimes higher grading fee. They are now requiring that all foreign gold minted before 1955 goes through the secure plus system designed to address large numbers of counterfeits. So two coins would cost me $90! That only makes sense if the coins are worth a lot more in that holder. As a result it is unlikely they will be getting the volume of submissions of those expensive to grade coins.

    Chris and Owle,
How funny it is that the first post I go to respond to is yours, Chris.

    Must be good Kharma ...

Actually, both PCGS and NGC were swamped by the release of the 25th Anniversary Eagle sets and both have posted notices on their websites exp[laining the difficulties these sets presented. Many people were sending five sets at a time, which had to be submitted in the sealed unopened mint package for all five coins to qualify for the anniversary label. This created a huge problem since they were shipped from the mint with a presentation case fo each set. It's quite a story that would take a full page to explain, but suffice it to say they weren't prepared to handle all the "other stuff" that came with these sets that the submitters want returned. Then put the holiday season and the Fun show into this equation and it's been a royal nightmare. I sent my first set of five to NGC on Nov 18th. It took eight days to show as checked in, and they had them graded seven days later. I sent my second five sets in on Dec 7th and they didn't show up as checked in until Dec 22nd. They'e still waiting to be scheduled for grading.
These sets will probably go down as the most problematic issue ever minted, as from the first minute they went on sale at the US Mint ... the entire website crashed ... then the phones ... lol. What a fiasco for all involved.

  12. I sent in an economy submission to PCGS on the 23rd of November. They checked it in on the 30th of November. They have yet to be graded. :( The upside is, they will probably come in the new holders :D
