I recently purchased a bulk lot of Walking Liberty coins after closer inspection of this 1944 d I found this molten pool looking damage to the reverse side as if someone had tried to melt the coin, but strange is it lacks "heat marks" that one would assume to be prevalent after getting it hot enough make such an indention. I have attached pictures of both sides. Does this look like a mint error or after the fact? Anyone's opinion would be appreciated.

    Looks like damage to me.

It looks like someone hammered it from the reverse with some sort of cylindrical (or roundish) object. Note how the metal on the obverse is pushed out in the same roundish shape. Definitely PMD.

You are right and this is a good example of what I have been trying to tell a few people on here. when I find a suspicious looking coin the first thing I check is to see if the other side is damaged. coin metal is soft and if one side has severe PMD then the other side will as well.

Post Mint Damage, for sure but I still love those Walkers.
