    Hello all,

My father-in-law just gave my son these coins (pictures below). How much do you think they are worth?

  3. The nickel is worth about $2.50, and the dime I can't see if it has a mintmark if it does not it is worth about $14-17 dollars. According to my CoinAGE magazine.

    Thanks ibuildcircuits!

  5. Yep. If the dime has a "S" mintmark it could be worth $150!! Check it for a "S" mintmark. :)

The V-Nickel was dug up by a metal detector. Dug-up nickels usually exhibit cameo-like rust just as your V-Nickel does. Factoring in all of the damage, the coin's worth about a buck or buck-fitty.

As for the dime, it may have also been dug up by a metal detectorist (possibly the same one that dug up your nickel)... It shows signs of harsh cleaning and areas near the rim where rust/oxidation has set in. Factoring in the damage, the coin's worth around $5 or $6 to the right person. :)

Guys, the 'S' mintmark would be located within the wreath at 6 o' clock... And it's big... Really big!

    Here's an example...

... Fairly certain the OP's coin is no '56-S. ;)

The nickel is worth about a dollar -- it's suffering from corrosion. The dime is worth about ten. Not a bad coin for being dug.

    IMO, of course. :)

Thanks for you input all - it is much appreciated!

The dime was black like the nickel too, but I tried to clean it with my sweatshirt - do you think that damaged it?

Yup, you just scratched it more than likely. But don't worry too much, not like it was a million dollar coin. ;)

If you get a coin again leave it though. Especially the 56 eagle!

WHy are 56 eagles rare? I just cashed in a roll of like 15 of them a long with some 1922 pennies, oh and a cool 1955 magicians coin where all the lettering was doubled. She gave me a 1964 kennedy for all them so it was worth it :)

Bad "CENTS" of humor. Falls under the catagory of "Don't try this at home".

Some people take the advise of you experts very seriously.
