I came close to getting this raw token this week but couldn’t come to terms on a price with the owner. His price just kept going higher & higher as we discussed the token (& the more he learned about the token). In the end, I backed-off so it is not mine today. I did take a couple pictures so you could all see it.

How high should I have gone?

The obverse is sort-of based on the Connecticut Higley design with the dear. My book states that 20 examples were produced in silver and 150 examples were produced in brass, copper, nickel, plated and tin. This one is a white metal or silver. I didn’t weigh the token or measure its diameter.

I have since checked the Internet for references & found 4 slabbed examples have been sold in silver & white metal by Heritage in recent years. Prices realized varied from $350 to $450 for white metal examples & $1,150 for a silver example.
Would have been a nice token to get eh? If you know the piece then I’d be interested to know how high you think I should have bid.

I'm hoping that some of our token collectors will chime-in & let me know what this token might be worth.

I think anything south of 1200 would have been fair...

Thank you for the input!!! I really don't know much about the Token market. Based upon the Heritage records & Rulau catalog I was thinking it would sell for about $500 retail. I'm beginning to believe that it is more widely sought-after so maybe you are correct that it could sell for as much as $1,200.

I'll let you know what the price is if I have another shot at buying it. So do you collect tokens? There was a "Wizard" counterstamp coin from NY in this collection that looked interesting & a few pieces listed as R8s & R9s. There was also a token commemorating the die sinker Bowlen. (There was also a lot of garbage IMO which is why I passed on buying it as a lot).

If you are familiar with the "Wizard" counterstamped token, what would a nice VF/EF silver colored one sell for? The Rulau catalog was something north of $300.

I love the alfred S. Robinson tokens.

I now have a complete set except for the lead one and I have no desire for that one.
They do get expensive and constantly climbing in price each year. I have heard that they may classify these as Civil War Tokens, but don't know if it's true

    Awesome

    Hello coinsarefun,

Wow, your collection is awesome. Thank you for posting it!

I did end up purchasing the token back in May. It is listed in the token book by Rulau.

My friend has a small book describing the man Alfred Robinson. He has been threatening to loan it to me & I expect to receive it after the FUN show. I will let you know if it includes good information about your tokens.
