I am new to the site and wondered if there are any Early US Commemorative Collectors out there? Ive been collecting them for over 2 years now and know its not a widely collected series but I love the fact that each one is unique and different (aside from the PDS and a few series that span a couple years). Jeff
Hi Jeff! Welcome to the Forum. There are quite a few of us early commem collectors on Cointalk. Which one is your favorite?
Yea, a favorite... Tough to say because they all are so nice, except the Monroe. I would say the one that I don't have yet, the Hawaiian Battle of Gettysburg, Connecticut (I love that tree) and California Diamond Jubilee. The Oregon too. How about you, do you collect any?
I have about 10-15 of them in 65 or better. I really like them. I think the series is at a low and perfect time to buy the attractive ones. I love the low mintages. Great series
Welcome Jeff, glad to have you. I've been collecting off and on for 5 years. I would love to put the entire type set together some day. I have a regular US type set in a Dansco 7070 I have to finish before I tackle the commems.
I have a mix of them in different MS states, I am very close to finishing my type set, problem is that I started with slabbed in 64-65 but have since moved to raw coins in an album. Its a pricey endeavor to get both. There are a LOT of cleaned coins out there in raw, I wish online sellers would be accurate with their descriptions.
Op, I would say that there aren't as many collectors of them today, but that is a great thing for those who do. This series was very hot in the 80's. All series go through hot stages, and cooler ones, and I would say its best to buy a series when they aren't hot. If I were pursuing US coins today, I would be buying early commemoratives and high circulated grades of 19th century issues. Better long term value than other choices that are more popular today. Chris
Hi Jeff! I agree with you as far as why you like them. My second one is on the way in the mail! It is a gorgeous Oregon Trail, which might be my favorite design. My first one was a Pilgrim. My next is probably a Diamond Jubilee or a San Diego...eventually I'll get a Pan-Pac, but I'll be saving for a while for that one Welcome to the forums!
Welcome to the forums! Yep lots of commem loving going on here. I'm not sure what my favorite one is but the Texas sure looks good. Lehigh bought one from Tmoney awhile back that I really loved. I think it was a nice toned Gettysburg but not positive.
Welcome Jeff! There are a few of us on here that like the Commems. We are definitely a minority however. I started a group awhile ago dedicated to them. http://www.cointalk.com/groups/61/ Come join in!! I've focused on commemoratives because, well, like David Bowers says in his book, "Commemoratives are interesting." Each one tells a story. Some have shady pasts. Most detail something interesting about U.S. history, and some are just plain beautiful. Below are a couple of my favorites. I'm really enjoying working towards a complete type set. I'm only 5 away from a full set! I find them endlessly fascinating.
You're not alone, Jeff. I too like many of the designs and have thought of putting together a 50 piece type set (one of each design). I really don't see the need to buy all of the dates/mintmarks and build the 144 piece complete set, but some folks do. I also like the gold classic commemoratives too.
Jeff, Since you like the early commems, you've got to take a look at this complete set. It was purchased jointly by Pinnacle Rarities and Mark Feld a few years ago for $1 million+ but I learned recently that it had been broken up and sold. BTW if you want a nice place to drool over some great Commem sets check out http://www.pcgs.com/SetRegistry/Composite.aspx?c=103 I'm currently 60 out of 180! The top sets are truly gorgeous.
I too was a 50 piece set guy but later I have found that the mintages are so low on some that I am picking up more and more of the 144 set.
I like them too. Not trying to build a set but instead collect some attractive ones in designs I like. I don't see them moving much in value, though. Lance.
Wow, I am glad to see so many awesome coins, how do you all get such great photography? I will check out those links. Thanks all Jeff
Checked it out, nice registry set. I have a mix of PCGS and NGC, might have to consider starting a registry, but with NGC since they allow PCGS.
