GE Reveal bulbs are my favorite, but I would get rid of the fluorescents and use GE Reveal incandescent bulbs. There is quite a difference in the light, and thus the color, each puts off.

And it's not that your pics are bad, it's just the color that is off. But with any free photo program you should be able to turn this into this -

The white balance, that's all. It takes 2 clicks to do that.

Do you have Microsoft Office, any version of it on your computer ? I ask because most computers do when you buy them.

I do have it on the computer but do not have a product key. I have to pay additional $143 to get one and have access to the program. I wish I did because it would make a dramatic difference to the images. I think I will try the grey card for $5 before I suffer through the product key.

Gimp has been mentioned, there are other free programs that will work too, like Picasa. You can google either and have it going in just a few minutes. Your pictures look good, they have nice crisp focus, so with a little white balance they will be perfect.

If it came on the computer new, then you should have gotten the Office disk with the computer. The product key in on the package that contains the disk.

I create my madness on a laptop. Microsoft came installed already on the computer. I originally bought this laptop for my father about a year ago for when he was on the road. After the tornado, I poured a gallon of water out of my computer tower that was in my back yard. I have no idea where the programming and photoshop software went that I had for that particular computer. My parents also had a desktop and used their insurance money from that to buy a new laptop for my father and he in return gave this one to me. I never purchased the product key for this laptop and you only get to use the programming 25 times before it locks up. So now, I need to buy the product key to be able to access the programs. It's in the near future just don't have the funds currently available. (Well, I do have the funds but want to keep them available till after Christmas in case I have more desperate collectors selling their items for present money. It's the best time of the year to score great deals :) )

If you download GIMP, it is quite simple to adjust the white balance in post processing. BUT, it is far better to adjust your white balance at the photography stage. I will describe here how you can adjust the WB of your photos using GIMP.

    1. Open your image in GIMP. It should look something like this:
    process_1.jpg

    2. From the Colors Menu, select the option "Levels...".
    process_2.jpg

    3. When the Levels window opens, find the "White Balance" eye dropper. I have highlighted it in pink here so you can see it. Click on this button.

    4. Once you have selected the white point eye dropper, you will drag the eye dropper icon to your picture and find an area that is supposed to be true white. In the case of your photo, the NGC holder should be white. I position the eyedropper in the upper left area of the picture over the NGC holder plastic area.

    5. One simple slick of your mouse in this area, and you can see how the photo is adjusted for white balance. Click "OK" in the original Levels window to accept the change of colors.

With just a bit more processing, and some additional tweaks, sharpening, etc. I have created a composite image of your coin below. ALL of this was done using GIMP.

Most new computers come with the eval type Office pre-loaded without a disk. That's likely what he got if it's asking for a key because if you order a machine with Office and paid for it, it likely is pre-configured where no key is needed. Most computers it seems nowadays don't even come with a CD, they have a recovery partition on the hard drive that stores all the original OS installation, etc.

I'm using gimp now and reprocessing all 145 some odd images. Looks like this will take me most of the day. :( I gotta figure out how to be more timely with this process by either trying the grey card or maybe buying a different camera all together. I will post the new pictures soon of the dimes and then will start the tedious task of changing all my eBay listings :(

Your camera is fine, you just need to fine-tune the settings. Many cameras have major issues with macro photography out of the box.
