Ok, as some of you know I have been sorting through a collection that I recently acquired. In this set I just ran across something that I can not find any information on. Its a 1971 Mint set. It has no S cent in it and 2 without mint marks in the blue folder. Any know anything about this?

It appears to half of 71 mint set, the Philadelphia half. One of the one cent coins should be a S mint. IN your pic is there a blue edge at the bottom of the set like at the top? If there isn't, it is possible that some one opened the set and replaced the "S" mint cent with a Philedelphia mint cent. Other wise someone at the mint made a mistake and sealed two "p" cents.
The Denver set would have a red edge on each end and contain only Denver mint coins.
If you do a search for 1971 mint set on ebay you'll see what I mean.

oh both of them are in the envelope. Its a complete Mint set, I jsut scanned the blue one. (D). It is sealed all the way around, I cropped it. I have attached the other set and you can see nothing has been tampered with. I know there are some Proof sets like this and a 95 mint set, but I have yet to find a 71.

WALTER is right, you can find the info on the 1971 mint set in the book U.S. PROOF AND MINT SETS BY RON GUTH AND BILL GALE. The 1971 mint set only had one s-mint coin the Lincoln cent.

I know what was supposed to be in the set. The set I have has NO "S" cents in it and two of the no mint mark cents.

I wouldn't get all excited yet, this happens quite a bit. You might get a premium for it but probably not enough for a new bike unless you want a huffy:)

bq is right - it does happen often enough.

Have seen on eBay once a silver proof set where they left out the Florida quarter; instead it had two Texas quarters, and one of these was facing the wrong way!

Not sure if any interest will develop in packaging errors, but it does happen on ocassion apparently. Mint sets, there's no effort to orient the coins in a certain way, but separate hoppers are used for each of the coins in the set. It's uncommon, but not unheard of, for the wrong coin to end up in a hopper and thus have an error in packaging. It seems to happen less often with proof sets, because there's actually a recognition tool to make sure they're oriented a certain way, but again, the wrong coins can end up in the hoppers and orientation errors do ocassionally happen.

OK, thats all of the quote I need.. GD says it does happen often enough.. That meaning that I can indeed order my new Harley.. THANKS..

Just kidding of course, thanks for the responses gentlemen. Still have not seen one anywhere else nor has any of the other dealers in Southeast Michigan.

The coin is not missing a mintmark....that is why none of the dealers have seen it....all the problem is that when the mint was packing the coins a P mint coin was put in the place of the S and sealed....no wonder most dealers haven't seen it...they just buy and sell again sometimes without looking to much at the coins.

    My theory:
Two buddies are sitting on the assembly line.Guy one has the phillys and Guy 2 has the SanFrans.Guy 2 falls asleep and his buddy, fearing he'll lose his job, pitches in two from his pile.Of course,if he was smarter,he would have grabbed one from the other pile. What do you think?

Ok, now I am on a search for the set with 2 S mint cents in it. Oh the searches never cease..

Packaging error mint sets like this one typically will bring a dollar or two over that of a normal set. Unless you can successfully hype them on eBay in which case there is no telling how much you moght be able to rip off a sucker for. It just depends on your creative writing ability and getting the right sucker. (I don't advocte doing this, just stating a fact.)
