I browsed through the forums and didn't see one of these, if there is feel free to point me to the correct forum and delete this thread. Just wondering how many of you spend the uncommon denominations of the USD, how frequent? Usually once every 2 weeks I'll grab $50 in $2's and $20 in halves. Every time that I spend either in a gas station, restaurant, mall, or wherever, that cashier usually says something along the lines of "Ooo, I haven't seen one of these in forever, I'm gonna take that home for my kid, or save it cause they are a collector's item. If I still worked my old job in retail I would take $2's to work and $1 coins and use them as change. Your turn.
I personally don't have a story but there's a lot online about people being arrested for using $2 bills. Here's one: http://www.wnd.com/?pageId=29732
Well, when I visit my local bank I always ask for Ikes, Presidential dollars, $2 bills and halves. I use 'em for the daily two dollar bridge toll. During the summer flea market season I sell 'em at the local flea market for a small profit. I spend most of them at the local establishments and never had a problem except one place wouldn't take my $2 notes (thought they were fake). All of these make interesting "tip" money also, and usually much more appreciated than beat up dollar bills.
Surprisingly, it was from a gas station. Usually the only time I get 2 dollar bills now is when I go to take my bottles and cans in. The place I do that likes to get 2's and they always give them out. Supposedly, many of the people turning in the recyled stuff keep their bills.
I just came back from Chik-fil-a and the girl taking our change looked at it for a bit, turned to me and asked if half of a dollar was fifty cents. I smiled and said yes and my wife giggled and says she sees why I think it is interesting getting reactions.
I can honestly say I have spent 1s, 2s, 3s, 15s, and 25s. In the days of the USSR those were real denominations of coins and bills. Now only sort of odd denomination is 2 kopek coin. But it will not buy a phone call or anything else anymore.
I spend $2s all the time Halves and large dollars I find a bit bulky, but I circulate them occasionally As for small dollars, also occasionally - I'm OK with them especially if we got rid of the paper $1, but I normally have plenty of paper $1s and/or $2s many people have been surprised or confused. you'd think that people would know half of 100 is 50, but not always. no problems counting $1 coins and $2 bills once they take them. sometimes I have to explain that $2s have no watermarks, security threads, et cetera (this could also be an issue with old $5 and up bills, but not so far)
Well this isn't exactly on topic but I was with a friend who was buying gas when the new $20's came out a few years ago. He tried to pay with one and the clerk actually called the police. I went inside to find out what was taking so long and he told me the police were on the way. I asked the clerk to open her drawer and look through her 20's, and sure enough there were other new 20's in the drawer already...that's when she realized her mistake and told us to go ahead and leave.
We do not have any odd denominations (I am in the euro area) as far as circulation coins and notes are concerned. But several euro countries issue "collector coins" which can be had at face and are legal tender in the issuing member state only. So don't try and spend them as you would spend regular euro coins - even cashiers in the country of issue (where they should, in theory, be usable) are somewhat likely to say "uh" and "nah", and ask questions or make comments. Oh, the Slovenian 3 Euro coins But then years ago I got questions and comments about spending silver 10DM coins in Germany. But the shopkeepers always took them. Silver then was not worth much.
