The color is from poor lighting. I was looking at some of the stars to the left, especially the one right below and left of "OR" in live free or die and the letters in "e pluribus unum", especially pluribus.
No idea about the coin but every time I see one I laugh. Being from NH that they chose the Old man of the mountain and a few short years later he 'fell down' lol.
