are these worth anything? i picked a couple up from different states at flea markets over here recently.
A Mexico Revolutionary coin from the state of Oaxaca. While a large percentage of the coins from Oaxaca are common, the rectangle coins (1c & 3c) are not. This is the "common" of the two 3c varieties. They are highly counterfeited and even when purchased from reputable dealers, you should be very careful. Krause lists this coin at $600 in XF and I've seen ugly/problem examples bring $300. This just arrived back from PCGS today (along with the 1c in MS64BN). I'm guessing that this is probably the finest known example.
Weellll... this is my absolute favorite ancient coin. I adore it. But I doubt anyone else will see the appeal. It's impossible to ID, I think - too badly damaged. On one side, you CAN see a few lines still visible, from whatever was impressed in it. But I did a poor job photographing it, looks like. Sigh. The metal is gold. it is HEAVY. About an inch in diameter . .
Those are amazingly well done for a piece from that era - great portraits. From a historical context they represent a passing of the torch - Charles I was not in line for the throne until his older brother Prince Henry died in 1612.
i just wish henry had lived, charles was an idiot who tried to rule our country like his own private piggy bank. thank god for cromwell. apart from james I the stuart dynasty was the worst in our history full of embezzlement, debauchery and stupidity............
Thanks, I read somewhere that this was a Simon de Passe design. He also has several similar pieces attributed to him. This is one of my favorite pieces, I really love the James I portrait.
Very interesting. I confess I need to be stronger in British history, I study it up until about 800, but confess I do that with most western European history. Chris
I've been finding a lot of those in junk bins. There is obviously someone still making those. Some are stamped copy, most are not. They feel like they're made out of lead or silverwashed steel. The arrangement of the reverse pattern is identical on all of the restrikes that I've seen, which is what first raised my eyebrow.
Tax Token collectors are pretty thin on the ground. I'm used to buying those for $0.10-$0.25 apiece. Some of the fiber & paper tax tokens are worth a bit more (probably undervalued, but thinly traded at $5 apiece or so).
I doubt any more than on any other throne sir. Roman history, Chinese history, Byzantine history, Sassanid history, all are replete with idiots in power. World history today would be much different were it not for ill timed idiots in power in certain countries. Then there is all of the idiot presidents in the US....
