Hi Folks Came across this 1923 peace dollar. Noticed what appears to be a crack near the 3 in the date. Is this what they considered a cracked planchet or is it pmd. Hard to tell from the photo's but there is a crack that runs up thru the 3. Any info would be appreaciated. Thanks for any info sorry about the pictures best i could manage. Sorry if posted in wrong forum.
I wish that last pic was in focus, might be able to tell what was then. Try another of those pics. Your camera was trying to focus in the face of the coin instead of the edge. Try to get it to focus on the edge. Backing up a tiny bit might help with that. Either way I don't think it's a cracked planchet, might be a a planchet flaw though, something entirely different. Or, it might be damage.
I was just curious. Picked 5 up at a indoor antique mart. The gentleman had a bunch of them in a box for sell for a few dollars over melt value. Was just looking them over when i noticed this one with the crack on it.
In the obv pic it looks like a planchet flaw, in the edge pic it looks like a cut - PMD. But in the end it doesn't really matter, the coin would still only be worth what you paid for it and that's about it.
Looks like a cracked planchet to me, with the typical edge clips that accompany them. Assuming it is a cracked planchet, it isn't terribly valuable because it is a slight crack, but a neat coin nonetheless.
I'll take Cracked Planchet for 500, Alex. FWIW, the cracked area not being "bright" or "fresh" is what led me to say the above.
But it would only be bright or fresh if it was new. An old cut would not be bright or fresh either. Neither would a planchet flaw. Either way, can't tell based on the pics what it is.
Thanks for the info. I'm going to go with it as being pmd, probably why it was in a pile with other peace dollars
At those antique markets I've seen many coin that were in the junk bin that were not junk, but varieties, vams etc. IMO, these photos lead me to think your coin has PMD.
The photos aren't good enough to tell for sure but I strongly suspect from what I see that it IS a cracked planchet.
I'm saying PMD... Examples of cracked planchets that I've seen in the past look nothing like this. The cracks are typically rough, ragged, and/or have abrupt direction or length/width changes. This Peace Dollar's just got a good-sized cut, IMO. -Brian
