The picture is a very nice one for a background or other artistic endeavor. As someone hinted, with autofocus point and shoot cameras you usually have very limited f-stop capabilities (aperture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aperture). The range is usually somewhere around the f/4-f/7 range. BUT, if you have a fancy-schmancy camera/lens with a very high f-stop you can focus almost the entire frame regardless of where the coin lies in the plane. Incidently, the higher the number (e.g. f/22) the less amount of light that the lens let in, and the longer the exposure and need for a tri-pod. The extreme of the concept is a pin-hole camera alla middle-school science classes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pin_hole_camera).
alright, for my 1,111th post, I am going to try and do one of the obverse reverse pictures that in my opinion, look magnificent. so, here it is... i think it is pretty good, i worked on it for maybe 30 minutes on photoshop. when i painted the background, it got some of the coin but not a lot. tell me what you think! I have tried similar things but haven't had much luck with coin in Air-Tite especially the Direct Fits.
