We did a little shopping this last weekend & got these three coins. They are all three silver & all are about the size of a US quarter. This first coin is a 1969 2-Rial from Ajman. The reverse depicts a chicken below the Emirate’s state emblem.

Ajman is located in the Persian Gulf. According to the Krause Catalog, Ajman has an area of about 100 square miles and was the smallest emirates in the United Arab Emirates. In 1969 about 20,000 of these coins were minted for this sovereign country. (Of course, all collectors that want 1 coin per country now have to share what was minted). In December of 1971 Ajman became one of the 6 original members of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Krause states that Ajman has a population of 6,000 and Wiki states that the population was 36,000 in 1980. After viewing recent aerial photos of the area I suspect that it has grown considerably in recent years. I’ve only seen photos. Has anyone at CT ever visited this Emirate?

The second coin in this group is from Brazil. It is a classic beautiful Brazilian coin IMO. The obverse simply depicts the laureate liberty head surrounded by stars.

The reverse depicts a simple wreath with the country, denomination, and date. There were 9 million of this 1924 Brazil 2,000 Reis minted. It is sometimes only valued for its bullion content but this example is nice BU and definitely a keeper.

The third coin in this trio is a 1960 Greek 20 Drachmai in BU. They made 20 million of this date. It is sometimes only valued for its bullion but again, this one is a real keeper. The reverse of this coin depicts Selene the moon goddess on horseback with a dolphin & water waves below.

Post em if you got em

Sorry that my photos amplify the flaws on this Greek coin & really don’t do justice for this beautiful coin. Thanks for letting me share. Post em if you got em.

Really cool, thanks for sharing these. I had never heard of Ajman, and I usually know geography pretty well.

Nice pickups. I love the Brazilian coin and it is along the lines of my new interest (when I have the time). I am living in Brazil now and am looking for more coins from here that I can collect. So, if you have more from here to post, please do!

Speaking of this coin i see it in ebay all the time there is ebay seller who spams the listing with gold plated version of these coins hoping to dupe someone into buying this thinking it is a gold coin.

Ask & ye shall receive- This is a Bolivian 8 Reales dated 1808. It is counterstamped by Minas Gerais (a state in eastern Brazil). The counterstamp made this coin legal tender in Brazil as 960 Reis.

I have traveled around the mega city of Sao Paulo and I've traveled to Manaus also. It is a great place to visit when it is winter in the Northeast USA. Have fun & be safe while you are in Brazil.

After reading your post, I looked it up in the Krause catalog. Greece did make a gold proof pattern 20 Drachmai coin dated 1960. It is valued at $20,000 in the catalog. It would be a pretty coin IMO.

Here is a set of Brazil leprosy colony coins from Colonia Santa Teresa. They all have a common reverse that simply has C.S.T. stamped at the center. I've posted these at CT before.

Very cool! Thank you very much. I have always needed a bit of a starting point to get going. Now it´s a matter of actually finding any dealer in SP to at least begin. I´d hate to have to buy my Brazilian coins only when I visit the US. Thanks again for the info and the wonderful pics!
