I don't think it's the location that is the trouble. Cyprus is under consideration, for example. At least Turkey has a toe in Europe proper. I think it's more of a religious issue.
Cyprus isn't a country and the only toe in Europe Turkey has is Greek territory it illegally occupies. IMHO.
Turkey is not among the countries that will join the EU in 2004. http://europa.eu.int/comm/copenhagen_council_20021212/index_en.html Whether the country might join afterwards (either along with Bulgaria and Romania, or at some later stage), remains to be seen. Don't think that "territorial" issues play any role here, but there are many other factors that currently still make Turkey's membership unlikely. Crito,Cyprus,is most definitely a country.It is a member of the British Commonwealth.The currency is the Pound,which is divided into 100 Cents,just like in Malta,which is the other British Commonwealth country that has joined the European Union.As for them joining the Eurozone,there are plans to join it in either 2006 or 2007. I have seen these on ebay - fantasy pieces, and the doner one is a joke for sure. Now someone is selling sets of propsed euro sets from Turkey and all the other new or potential countries. They are just privately issued prototypes with no official connection to anything.
Well, Turkish döner food is (along with the Greek pendant gyros) actually the most popular fast food in Germany. Maybe that is why the manufacturer of those medals used that image. Yup, I just ate one for lunch. They are even bigger than McDonald's etc., and they are all sold by individual guys in a small store or stand who are in business for themselves. As far as I know, there are no döner franchises. They are filling, healthy (I think), and not too expensive. But I am 99% sure that no Turk would want a guy cutting döner meat as their euro design.
Even countries like the Baltic States , Poland and the like will probably not have the Euro before 2007.
