Stopped by the coin store and picked up some recent Kennedy halves that weren't released into circulation (since 2002 have onyl been released in mint sets, and rolls and bags the mint sells). I am now within 3 coins of finishng the Kennedy half dollar business strike series! Just need 2003 P, 2003 D, and 2005 D. Would be the first series I've managed to finished... will check next week to see if the coin store gets them (or other stores) or maybe eBay... will be glad to finally get this finished!
I just finished my third set of Kennedy's including the P, D, and S mint marks and the 1998-s matte coin(slabbed of course). Now I'm considering whether to add the silver halves to each set. Just don't have a book that holds only silver. Don't know if they make one really.
Hey, what a coincidence! Those are the only three I have! No, not the only three, but I do have a Kennedy from all of the dates you eed, in a recent set I picked up for $10: it had from 2002-2005 inclusive a P & D kennedy. Also, it figures that after I bought the set, they added 2006 P & D and kept the price the same.:headbang: Oh, and none are slabbed.
I just won a roll of 20 2006 Kennedy half dollar proofs on ebay and I only needed three for my set. I got them for less than 2.50 a piece after shipping. I figure that I can sell the other 17 for 12 to 15 bucks each next fall. Sweeeeeeet!
None of mine are slabbed either, be kind of pointless since it would cost more to have them graded than any of them are worth. Do have quite a few of them in BU or AU though. This is just the basic set I'm trying too finish first... doesn't have any of the proofs or silver proofs in it. Though separately I do have the 1971 S and 1989 S as loose mishandled proofs that I got in circulation, the 1972, 2000, 2005, and 2006 clad proofs in proof sets, and the 1976 silver uncircualted in the bicentennial set. I do however have the business strike coins that were not issued for general circulation (1970 D, 1987 P&D, 2000P, 2001P, 2002 to present) except for the ones I mentioned at the top of the thread, which I hope to get soon. 1970 D was the most I paid for any of them, but it was only $18 even in BU. Though the rarest business strike minted (not counting the matte finish 1998), everyone knew it was going to be relatively rare and not released for circulation, so many bought up the mints sets that year and thus is not hard to get, even in high condition. Besides, 2.5 million is not rare, lol, just rarer than any of the others. It is pretty similar to why the 1950 D Jefferson nickel is ont especially expensive. Don't think they have folders specially marked for the silver proofs, though suppose you could get generic unlableled half dollar books to use for that purpose.
Clarification, the only ones I have slabbed are the 1998-S matte finish halves. They are the only coins in the collections that are valued at over 300 dollars. I think that they are over priced but I only see them going up and up due to low mintage numbers (62,350). I haven't collected the 1979S and and 1981S type II variety halves. It's not that they are all that expensive, I just don't have any where to put them except in slabs. As far as the Silver half proofs go, they are still affordable with the two keys, 1995, and 1997, going for about 100 dollars each. A seperate book is pretty much the only way to keep them at this point. But there are only like 15 total coins so far and an entire book would be a waste if they stopped making them for some reason.
