Just becarefull with the 1914's! A lot of bleached versions on eBay! Look for signs of ink bleeding, and overly white notes in medium to heavy circulation. Oh and $50, $100's are off the charts in price. Your best bet is $5, $10, & $20's and can be fetched for under a bill for VF. Prices go up dramatically when you get into AU+ Red seals are a different monster, and unless your **** bent for one of those I would stick to blues.
Brought these two back with me from my trip to Belgium last week. Nice additions to my world collection!
1923 $1's are gonna be your cheapest bet. Depending on what you call cheap Here's one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1923-1-HORS...ltDomain_0&hash=item2c617ecfa4#ht_2904wt_1102
Or here is one from one of our forum members site if you are looking for a high grade one. http://shop.ldrcoins.com/1923-Silver-Certificate-64PPQ-Very-Choice-new-1923-Silver-Cert-0198B.htm
Good point on the '23 SC! I have about five or six, and I usually get them with lot deals. Most are Speelman/White's, and I think I have one Woods/White. My last lot I bought was that 1918 $1 FRBN, 25¢ Fractional, and 1923 $1 SC. With the price I paid on the lot, I basically got the fractional and '23 free. They are pretty common in low grade, and prices again go up exponentially pass VF+ as with most large notes. $20-25 for a VF is not a bad start to large notes. Now that I think about it I also got a 23 when I bought one of my 1914 $10. Again with the price of the lot, is was basically free. So keep an eye out for a lot deal, and you might score a 1914 FRN and a 23 SC without breaking the bank. I highly recommend buying a 1914 with a nice back! Even if you have to save for an VF+ - AU, cause that's what sales these. Again watch out for freaking bleached 1914! Because of the paper they used, these notes take very well to Clorox and whiten incredibly, but I don't need to tell you what it does to the value and your stuck with the dang smelly thing! Hey any progress on that seller no buy note doctor list??? I know we have N77wood (or whatever it was)! Funny I was looking for a nice VF25+ Woodchopper all last week, and dang if I didn't end up on N77Wood's listings on Ebay. Heckkkk noooo, I don't care how good the deal is. What he did to one of our members is not right! I guess I should post a recent note LOL... I paid a lot for this little guy, but I think it was worth it! umm love those red seals! You know who else loved them? JFK! Some people believe he was assassinated for trying to get us away from FRN, and back on to U.S. notes. Heck the only difference between the two, is we're not paying interest on red seals!
Does anyone have a link to the "no buy note doctor list" ronterry mentioned? (Or post # if it's in this thread.) I never saw it. I just purchased a higher grade replacement note from n777mwood on eBay. I wasn't aware of any problems with this seller.
Yeah at one time I was going to purchase a '23 large as my first large but I think I decided to take something else over it. Storage issues have always led me away from purchasing any large size notes... -tbud
Oh I always thought they were WAY more expensive than that! Thats a heck of a good deal for the grade you get... Is it not? Thanks for sharing the link. -tbud
Matt has good prices and it a good guy. If your looking for a common Large note in High Grade that is a good one.
Haven't posted here for awhile -- been a busy year (I'm a father now!). Did manage to get out to a show last weekend though and made a couple nice pickups. First, a $20 1914 FRN.
And second, a 1899 $2 SC. hmm.. bit of scanner glare on the front of this one. might have to rescan later.
First, let me say that I really wanted the note and I often pay a premium when I really want a note. Nonetheless, I think I did ok — I paid $182.50 and I'm happy with the note in my collection.
WOW you must have wanted that one bad myself i could never bring myself to pay that for just one note i had a hard time giving up 100 for thses notes but i do know the feeling don't get me wrong i too have gone over and just had to have something like these notes from a web site called coolseialnumbers.com it is something no one will ever have or can get i would like to know how they got it ?? but its as they say COOL
