    Friday's Results!

I decided to spend a few hours on Friday hitting up some banks for halves. I got a nice score on Tuesday which I mentioned in a previous post. I did not think I could get better results but I believe I did. The highlights:

    1) 2 rolls with 19 40%s in each, 38 out of 40 were 40%! It was exciting sliding those coins out of the wrappers and first looking at them on edge.
    2) 1 roll with 14 40%s.
    3) 1 roll with 5 40%s.
    4) 1 roll with 10 90%s! This was from a lot with the wrappers marked. The first few were marked '1976', '1976', '1980-1990' and I thought 'great, someone dumped a bunch of skunks', then I saw this one that was marked '20 1964s'! My first thought was 'no way!' After I opened it I wondered what happened to the other 10?
    5) 1x 34 WL
    6) A bunch of rolls with 1 or 2 keepers.

    From just Friday I got 12x 69, 23x 68, 25x 67, 8x 66, 5x 65, 11x 64, 1x 34 WL ... 85 keepers! This is out of about $1000 in bought rolls.

For the last month or so I now have gotten 6x S's, 113x 40%, 15x 90%, 3x Bens, 2x WLs ... 139 keepers. Since I have just started doing this there is lot of territory near where I live that is virgin, at least to me. It is probably expecting too much for these results to continue.

Do any of you recommend going through or ordering a bag of half dollars versus boxes? Is there a difference? I can imagine the issue of re-wrapping the bag into individual rolls.

Finally finished my $200 bag of nickels... lol. final count:

    1x 1937 buffalo (may have been d mint mark - I can't recall right this second :p )
1x 1945s war (Yay! I FINALLY found a war! Lol... I was starting to despair...)
    1x very damaged dime
    1x penny
    2x canadian nickels

a handful of VERY pretty coins, various dates - 1958, 2x 1959, a few in the '70s, and several in the '80s, all with full steps.

1x 2004 severely light strike obverse - "4" only visible at an angle, "in god we trust" as well - "in" completely missing. reverse is fine.

1x struck through (I assume) obverse - no nose on jefferson. The rest of the obverse decently struck. (I forget the date - writing this at work right now)

several others I kept for various reasons. Great toning, great condition, or otherwise generally attractive.

I am just relieved to have found my first war nickel, after searching maybe $500 now. Lol. VERY worn, but I'm thrilled :)

I am working hard to get my hands on a camera. I have found quite a few coins I'd like to ask about as possible errors, and when/if I get a camera I will be making a thread in the appropriate forum about it <3 I glance at every coin I search, both sides, for anything glaringly obvious, and set aside known variety dates for later careful scrutiny ;)

Tomorrow turning in the rejects and buying a box of dimes.

Strike characteristics, weak or strong, will show up on both sides of the coin. You don't have a weakly struck coin, you most likely have a coin that was struck through grease.

OMG! tell me where you live. I am packing up the family and moving right now!!:thumb: SW Michigan is pretty dry. I started the beginning of nov. I'm going through about 2k a week. I have a total of 40% X11, 90% X1, and 11 dimes.

2 boxes of halves = skunk

very depressing. both boxes had tons of coins that were marked the exact same way.

I'll give it a couple more weeks to figure out if I just need to cycle through the crap or if this is a really active dump bank. I'm in a relatively small town and it seems like there are several roll searchers.

Yeah, in my locality in Southern California, I've gone through about 4,000$ in halves in the past 4 months, and I have very few keepers. Like only three or so from 1965-69. And one Frankie, which I sold. Many of the coins I got were marked in permanent marker with what I assume to be initials (SC if I remember right) so someone is going through a lot and marking all they have done.

Halves have just not been good for me. I also had the issue of having to go 15 miles one way for the coins, so that's just over a gallon of gas for a round trip. Each week means that's 4.00 plus an hour of my time, with bad results I quit that, so I'm not currently searching rolls of halves. The few I got that were keepers for silver content actually came from a credit union where I don't order boxes, but searched CWRs. The Frankie did come from the distant bank, but again only one in a lot searched doesn't even pay for gas.

For the people who are getting the coins, congrats! I have no bad feelings for you. But my locality is not good for them at this time. Now, I've had much better luck with cents, nickels, and dimes; still not much, but at least feels worthwhile to continue.

    Best find ever

I didn't do much searching this weekend, but I did get two boxes of halves.

One box was a skunk for silver, but did have 3 decent proofs.

The other box was my best in a while, 22 44%ers and 7 90%ers :D including (look to the left):

My first ever Barber Half find. :thumb:

However, this is not just any Barber Half. I looked at the date, and slowly turned it over and viola, no mint mark...... I found a key date!! I can see the LI and the TY in Liberty on the obverse, so I'm calling it a VG8 (I'm posting it in another thread to get other's opinions)....that makes this about a $175 or so coin...my best find ever (insofar as an individual coin). Please comment if you have experience with this coin.

I was so excited, I couldn't sleep the night I found it.... Here it is close up:

Thanks Merc. What was the totals for your road trip?

(And by the way, I finally got a 2011 (p) cent for my Dansco....If I could just find a 2011 p Native American or any 2011 quarters now)

I think it was 8 40%'ers, 6 90%'ers, 6 silver dimes, 1 V-Nick, 2 Buffs, and 2 Wars for the day. Very Meh compared to the kind of road trips I'm sure I could pull off if I lived down there in big sky country....

Not really roll searching but I want to post anyway. Too bad we did not have that other thread up and running yet.

I'm at work on Friday night at my part time job and it's been a long week so I treat myself to a soda which is $0.90. I get my dime back and it's a 2011. I put it back in the machine and hit the coin return and out pops a 1995 or something. I do the same thing with the candy machine and a new dime pops out everytime, one from the bottom of the stack I presume. I do this a few more times and hear a different sound when the next dime drops down. It was a 1963 Roosie!!! So even though I could not roll search on Friday because of errands I was still able to score a little silver. It totally made my night.

Cashed my check in on Saturday morning and they asked me where my daughter was. She was in the car with my wife. So this always nice teller is cashing my check and I'm making small talk with everyone and I ask for halves. She has $14.50 which are all clad, no big deal. She asked what I do with them and I said I save them for my daughter. Then she tells me since they are for my daughter she is going to save all of them that come in there for me and my daughter....as long as I come once a week with her (my daughter) to get them....NICE!
