I just acquired this medal, but unfortunately not labelled... medal is proof finish, appears to be silver and has a 4 digit serial number stamped on the edge... obv and rev images attached.

Does anyone have info about this piece?

Although I can't positively ID it the reverse is awfully similar to the arms of the city of Regensburg, Germany. There may be other towns with similar crests (but i can't think of one off hand)

    A token / medal perhaps?

I thought Regensburg as well but after a bit of checking I found that while the symbol of the city are the crossed Keys of St. Peter, the image of the Cathedral on the medal looks nothing like Dom St. Peter in that city..probably another German city or even a different church in Regensburg?

Thanks members, for the help... I appreciate it. I know it's not going to be easy getting this one IDed... but having a few names from you guys is a good start. Hmm, could be a medal from some German church or society...

This may be pure coincidence and have nothing to do with your medal - but ya never know.

In 1982 an organization by the name of Alsiss (Association of Learned Societies in the Social Sciences) was founded. Professor Dr I.M. Diakonoff was granted a Fellowship in this organization. The name Diakonoff is on the medal - so is the date 1982. The organization has a habit of awarding medals.

Now - do those bits of information mean anything as to identifying this item ? Dunno - but maybe.

thanks for the additional info GDJMSP.:thumb:

I ran a search earlier on european cathedrals and i think i may have found the place depicted on the medal... looks like the st pierre cathedral in geneva, switzerland. here: http://www.homestpierre.ch/en/pictures.htm

the arms of geneva looks kinda familiar too:

... the key and eagle... though not crossed keys and the eagle is crowned...

we're getting closer, but still, doesn't give any clear answer as to what medal mine is... could be from cathedral or geneva or elsewhere... hmmm... :(

Maybe I removed my earlier reply a little too quickly. While I was writing it, "sterling" had already found out that the one side showed the cathedral in Geneva, so my identical response looked weird. :D

The eagle and the (one) key are from Geneva's CoA. The two keys (from the Vatican CoA) on the other side, and the date, refer to a papal visit; John Paul II was in Geneva in 1982.

    Ka-ching! ....I think we have a winner! :)

I'm pretty well 101 % sure that Christian has id'd this piece correctly.
