I found a 1967 penny with nothing stamped on the back side. It is completely smooth. It does not even have the lip around the edge. At first I thought it had been sanded down. I weighed it and compared its weight with a normal penny from the same year, and they weigh the same. So I don't think it was sanded. Is this a good find? Does this have much value? Thank you. Ryan
Sorry to bring bad news Ryan but your coin is damaged and only worth a cent. I think your first instinct that it was sanded is probably correct. The relief(the height of the raised areas of a coin) isn't very much and you don't have to remove much metal to have a smooth surface. Unless you have a very accurate scale it may not show any difference in weight to another cent.
You may be right. My scale is accurate to 0.1 gram. The more modern pennies (after 1982) weigh 2.6 grams. This 1967 weighs 3.0 grams. An older wheat penny weighs 3.1 grams. So its possible some of the penny has been worn down. Oh well! Ryan
Looks like a hammer job, IMO. Noticed how the obverse's relieved design elements show flattening and how the rim has slightly expanded. -Brian
