Some of us are lucky enough to pass our enthusiasm along to their kids. Right now, mine is into whatever Dad is into. Wonder if it will stick through time? Anyone have a good story of perhaps, getting someone else interested in the hobby who is numismatically noted, in some way? Father and son find freak coin? Along those lines. Please share a personal experience in which your influencing someone into the hobby has lead to their success down the road. Thank you!
Love those pics! Makes me think of my little guy. Here is one of my son... he loves to dig through proof sets. I can't wait till he's older and understands more... hopefully he's got it in his blood too.
Last year I gave my fathers Lincoln cent collection to my 10 year old nephew. All of them pretty common. The boy is head over heels into Lincolns now. We talk often and he tells me his stories. Not big deals for me but really special to him. He has actually taught me a few things. My problem now is he's fallen in love with Morgans, too. I told him it'll be a few years until he can graduate into them.
Letting kids digging through your coin collection would make them interested in collecting, but not necessarily coins. My parents started me off in stamps and I moved on to so many different things. Funny enough out of all my collections, I put everything else before stamps. Also make sure your kids wash their hands after digging through the coins. They have a tendency to put their hands in their mouth and you don't want that.
What kind of B-day cake does my 8 yr old want? Well, a year ago it may have been a transformers robot. Today, a Peace Dollar
My sister made me a Morgan Dollar cake for my birthday. I have a display in the coffee table and I noticed one of the Morgans was out of it and was like "Hey whats going here!" Then saw the cake and was like ohhhhhh. It was good
I raised three daughters and exposed them to all the things I love. Each went their own way. I think their interest in coins will be ignited when my estate goes through probate. LOL. Lance.
I tried to get my three sons into coin collecting. For awhile it work, but like most things kids try, they quickly moved to something else. Two of them ended up spending their coins (including some buffalos and ikes I gave them, was not too thrilled about that), but the youngest still has everything. So now when I come across something he needs, I give it to him (typically the ATB quarters). Hopefully when they all get older, perhaps they'll get back into it. I just wished I collected coins when I was younger. I could have had such a decent collection at the fraction of what it cost today (I was born in 1980).
Nice - looks like he is having fun. I watched a father bring in his 6 and maybe 9 year old daughter last week at the local shop. He gave them each $10 to do some shopping with. They each bought a couple of coins.
Starting them younger! I made this for her when she was 2 or 3 months old. She's 6 months now and tried it on for the first time. ( I couldn't wait any longer ) The cut out buffalo nickel was about $8 shipped. The jump ring was $1.50 from a local jeweler. The sterling silver necklace was $5 at a local pawn shop. Being able to give a gift she'll keep forever that will always remind her of Daddy? Priceless!
A good friend of mine came over tonight. I haven't seen him in a while and so when he told me that because of my influence he'd started collecting coins for/with his young daughter, I gave him a '29s WLH. She will be thrilled!
