Man, what a great find. So jealous.
I purchased a metal detector last year. All I ever find are bullet casings and old matchbox cars.
This coming spring I think I will try leaving my backyard with it. Not to mention, I don't have any Oak trees in my yard.

    The end of the rainbow

You only get out of life what you put into it. Move on to the local parks, do the overgrown areas. Think about what was there 30 or 40 years ago. Talk to the seniors in you local area. They remember more then the youngests.

I can tell you from exprienced, there are all kinds of great finds. I was in an old park walking down one of the old paths. I got a hit, dug it up. And what I thought was two hose clamps turned out to be a "Hopalong Casside Flash Light Ring. I have musket balls that collide in mid-air and are welded together. I live in NYC where George Washington fought the "Battle of Brookly". The author was a personal friend of mine. He knew every step of the way throught Brooklyn. There were British troops here in Maspeth, for 8 years. Read the book I mentioned. It's great reading.
And remenber, if you keep your metal detector in the colset, all your going to find are your shoes.

Man, that's inspiring. Now I have to wait all winter. What is your honest opinion on the quality of the metal detector? Will I be missing anything because I have a $150 one compared to a $1000 one? Or is it more about the precision on detecting certain metals and avoiding junk?

    Gold Coins in a Jar

Not really, When I first went out detecting I use a beach machine. I had on a pair of big yellow boots.
And I know some of the other metalheads would laugh at me. Because I had no idea what I was doing.
I sent for a subscription with "Western & Eastern Treasure" magazine. You can check it out free on line.
They sell over 6 million copies. All the information you could ever use in in this book. All types of machines.
I like White's machines. I find the best because I use the best. Some people like Fords & some like Chevy's,

Take your time. there is no hurry. Use a slow steady swing. Keep the loop to the ground (about 1 inch).
Bring a gold ring and some different coins with you. I don't know what machine you use. But it may have a nneter & sound. When you check the ring & coins one at a time. Listen and remember the numbers that come up.Solid sounds usually mean some thing good. Some times it's trash. Also, remove all trash. You may get a positive signal, then it will go away. Sweep again, one time i found a quarter inside a bottle cap.

I like to get up on a Sunday morning and check the site I'm working now. I found coins, Revolutonary buttons, surgeons knife (same period). A bull point air hammer tool. I know this site has promise. So I dig with confidense.

As for the guys who use to laugh at me. I'm good friends with all people who detect. I donate a lot of items to historical homes, belong to hisorical society's, did adds for White's Metal detectors and had a movie "Treasure Hunt America" done about me and the donations I give out.

Enclosed is a picture of a "Chalis" I found down South. I donated it to the Sisters of Charity here in New York.
What ever you do, don't give up. The next great find is just around that tree.

    Regards,

P.S. Keep in touch and I will hunt with you one day. scan0001.jpg

Hey - thanks for posting your pics and telling your story. I've been toying with the idea of getting a detector (I live at the beach) for a while, but never pulled the trigger. This gives me new hope/motivation.

As far as the 'being put on trial' thing - you get used to it after a while.

I mean think about it for a sec:

"I found GOLD COINS buried in the ground."

"Pfft. They look like they're scratched. Too bad. Might get spot for 'em."

SERIOUSLY??! DUDE FOUND FREAKING GOLD. IN. THE. DIRT. THE DIRT!!
I think it's amazing, personally. Keep posting my friend.

Treasure Hunting America Episode 111 part 2 & Part 3

A lot of White's episodes are available on YouTube.

Kman, It's very admirable that you also pick up and get rid of the garbage you find while detecting. Also, helps eliminate the same hit again down the road if you return to the site. ;)

I think if you re-read Doug's post, he was not stating you can find those for sale below spot, but that's what the offer will be, and he was talking about the OP's $10 gold coin not a graded and slabbed one.

To the contrary, I am talking about a slabbed and graded one - NGC or PCGS, take your pick.

Granted, I was not saying that you can buy them for 10% less than spot. But that is what the dealers will offer you if you sell it to them. To buy one, common date MS63 NGC or PCGS, you'll have to pay about 10% over spot.

The same amount you'd have to pay for a gold bar of equal weight.
