    AND there is this statement from a professional metal detector searcher;

    I found six Roman Coins that are Two Thousand Years old right here in Queens. NY
    Maybe their owner is still alive. If I see any Romans looking for a lost [purse. I will give them back to them. Feel better.

    people never throw fakes out the window after they find out they have fake coins and realize they can't get their money back from the shady dealer in a dark alley in italy that sold the coins. :rolleyes: clearly, the metal detecting "expert" didn't make the statement with A LOT of sarcasm.

    How do you suppose the people who certify them know they're real? The same way we do, careful study and scholarship

    Not disagreeing sir. I was just wishing to apologize for not referring parthian questions offhand to your site, but to parthia.com. I guess I was just lazy and using my first reference when my Sellwood is not by my side, for any of these coins. Even then, Sellwood's dumb "handwritten" font can be brutal on the eyes. :(

    Yours, Robert Kokotailo's, and others are wonderful sites, and I learn a lot when starting on them. My post was simply to say I was not, (not) recommending yours, just naming where I start and I know offhand will have a definitive answer somewhere on the site. That's all sir.

    While we are disagreeing with you here MojaveDave, we are not disagreeing with your sentiments. TBH the number one question of non-ancient collectors is "how do you know its real?" Its the first I am always asked, and sometimes, "its really hard to believe something like this is real, I think they are all reproductions", is heard as well. So your comment is a valid comment, and like many things is something that has to be overcome.

    Stepping back, it is freaking amazing we casually have at our fingertips the ability to buy authentic coins minted so long ago when almost any other type of artifact from teh same era is prohibitively expensive. The simple truth is coins last almost forever buried in the ground, especially if protected. Couple that with the fact they were buried on purpose many times for protection, and were minted in gigantic numbers, and you have the current situation where coins are about the only affordable artifact from 2000 years ago everyone can own if they wish.

    I just wanted you to know Dave that your thoughts are far from uncommon, but when shown and explained WHY they can survive when most other artifacts are gone, most people tend to accept it.

    Chris, I appreciate your opinion. I sometimes feel I am being over antagonistic when I try to vent my feelings, but I get great responses such as yours which sometimes clears my thoughts.

    Thanks

    This is a case in point. I have posted this same picture on the World & Foreign coins forum, but I wanted you to see why I feel some Ancients are reproductions. Do you think this coin is 2000 years old ?

    Well if it were real it would be 2200 years old, but seeing more clear pictures I believe its a reproduction. Having it in hand would make me more comfortable saying that, but most markers for a reproduction are there.
