Oh yeah, you are right. But for whatever reason I thought only 2009 Lincolns were 95% copper, no?

Yep, the 2009 Satin Finish cents are 95% copper, and weigh 3.11 grams. The other Satin Finish cents from 2005-2008, and 2010 weigh only 2.5 grams are mostly zinc. All business strike cents post 1982 also weigh 2.5 grams.

  4. I agree that there are a good number of conditional rarities in the post 1965 era that will be overlooked by most collectors. These coins are simply not saved and are degrading as we speak. Clad: I would greatly appreciate if you could either post or PM me your short list of the years/denominations that you think are most likely to be in this category in the future. Thanks, TC

I have yet to find a 2009 nickel. I heard that these were just released in PR - is that true?

I have also found just one 2009 dime. So both those could be at least scarce, if not key. 2009 mintages seem to be low across the board.

That's true, the 2009's do have lowwer mintages, but because of that I think a lot of people will be saving those and therefore coins from that date will be more common in higher grades than others.

And the circulation version of 2009 coins will be very prone to what I call the "GSA effect". That is, they may be perceived as rare, but when the millions upon millions are released from the US Mint coffers they will be worth face value.

As far as the 2009 dimes go, I've found quite a few in roll searching. Possibly I have 20 or more, but I haven't counted recently. Most of course, are D mint marks as I'm on the west coast. I have put a few I've found back into circulation, but only if they are worn.

My take on it is that by the time people in the future want to collect the series, the 2009 dime will be scarce to find in Unc condition. But even so, If 200 people (not counting dealers and others who mine these for good ms coins to slab) each only take out 50 of the date in Unc condition, then that is 10,000 coins that will most likely continue to be available in Unc condition for collectors. Add to that the number available from dealers who got in on the first wave of them, and I don't see it as being 'rare' or particularly expensive. It might go in mid-to high range ms for a number of dollars, but most if not all of them under MS63 may not be worth more than an extra 5 cents to someone. That's my opinion.

Mint state 1982 and 1983 coins are already increasing in value due to the lack of Mint Sets issued in those years.

How can you tell the difference between satin finish and business strikes?

+1 Although not found in circulation, I like the comparative low mintages of some mint issues, even when considering most are saved. Take for examle the 2008 satin cents, the key date for the Memorial Series, with a mintage lower than the 1931-s cent and most of the 1931-s cents were saved. Or the satin state quarters, the keys to the most collected series in history.

Currently there are only 14 ads on eBay for 2008 Satin Cents and only 1 seller selling rolls and like the ads asks, "Ever wish you were around to put away a roll of 1931-s cents".

  15. Wow, are 2008 satin cents really worth $4 each? Wouldn't they be worth more in OGP or slabbed to clearly show that they are satin finish? TC

pretty late to the discussion, but I think any modern coins with significant cuds could be quite valuable in the future. They are truly rare, so it's just a matter of demand going forward.

Howabout 1999-D SBA Dollars? Production was just over 11M and all but a very small number that were sold in a special Mint Set were released into circulation. 1999-P had a production of about 36M. There was also a very small production of 1999 SBA proofs.
