Hello everyone! I need a little help. I just spent 2 hours online hitting every major search engine and came up dry. I'm in Malaysia on a business trip, and stumbled across a little local flea market, where I found something cute that my youngest kid might like, however I have no clue to if the price is fair. Can any one give me a clue to what a 1980 mint set of Ringgits is worth? The lady is asking 320RM ($91.00) That sounds a bit high to me, but I simply don't know. BTW, the kid isn't a little one any more.. this little hobby started 25 years ago. So spending almost a hundred bucks isn't the issue, but making sure I'm not getting ripped off is. ;-) Thanks!
Perhaps 320RM is a bit too expensive but I am not too sure what the mintage is like. But let me tell you, I got a silver mint set of a 1992 set, which most people wouldn't not have heard it's existence. I probably got it at around that price that you mentioned, but that is because I know the mintage is just a scarce 5000 and I don't think I have seen many silver proof Malaysian coin sets up for sale. I am hoping that you can find the mintage figure with the documentation inside, or else I am not going to bother buying it.
Howdy Robin - Welcome to the Forum !! The Malaysian 1980 Mint set is listed in Krause with a mintage of 2000 and a value of $2.50. There is no Proof set listed for 1980 - the closest is the 1982 Proof set with a mintage of 4000 and a value of $370. Now Krause values are sometimes way off, but I don't think they'd be off quite that much
That's interesting GDJMSP. Robin, can you actually describe or ask the lady of what is in that mintset that makes it so expensive.
Hmm guess it's safe to guess the value is somewhere between $2.50 & $370. The lady doesn't really know anything about coins, her only comment is that they sell for much more than she is asking. Next Sunday will be my last week-end here, think I'll stop by a give it one last look... and if it feels good take the jump.
Fair enough Robin, just remember this. If the date is 1980, they are only worth a few bucks. But, getting your daughter a gift that she would enjoy - THAT could be priceless
malaysia did issue a proof set dated 1980, minted by the franklin mint(small 'f' mintmark on the reverse sides) ... mintage limited to 5K, and only made available to the central bank's employees... a small amount of these proof sets were also sold by franklin mint overseas... Robin, i think you bought this set... if so, then the price u paid is almost the market value of this set (abt 300RM)... The set consists of coins from 1 sen till 25 ringgit, and contains 2 coins struck in sterling silver(10 ringgit and 25 ringgit)... So take into consideration the small mintage, very few of this proof set around, and the higher silver price, you got a good deal after all.
