Here is my 1749 Mexico City 2 Reale. There is something odd with it (besides being worn), can you figure out what it is? GD already knows I believe. Take Care All Bone
Not good with these, but the fact that it has a MM, or a date of 1749, or my last guess would be the absence of something above the crown on the dated side.
the legend on the obverse is, I believe, more typically a 5 petal rosette stop & start. your legend begins and ends with a dot - which either makes it a convincing counterfeit (with I doubt, because of the typical off-centeredness of the reverse strike) or a sub variety. I don't have my reference books handy right now, so I don't know which.
well... maybe - if that is a casting line on the reverse around 7 - 10:00. That may just be the photo, though
The only variety I see is FRD over PHS, but I don't see any evidence of that. If that's the variety you have, it's probably easier to spot in hand... and if that's the case - congrats, it's a pretty rare variety.
GD's post back to me some time ago on the PCGS list... ///////// There's a die crack that goes about 1/4 of the way around the coin - by VTRA. The coin was struck with rusty dies, which explains the roughness you can see around the rim. It was also a strike through error - the marks that you see going up through the center of the coin and under the Q. They are from a piece of string from a cloth that was used to try and clean the die before use - the string stuck to the die with the result that you see. I believe your coin is genuine. It shows quite a bit of wear though, so that hurts the value. But look closely at your coin as compared to mine. Notice the difference in how the obverse begins - yours has a pellet stop at the beginning and end. Mine has a floret stop at the same positions. My coin is a common variety - yours is a scarce variety. /////////// It's only worthy about $75 in this worn condition though. Bone
Geeeez Bone - that was a while ago ! How'd you ressurrect that thread from there ? But the surprising part is - that was YOU ??
Ya know this does bring up a good point - I have often wondered about many members on various sites and if I have run across them before under other names. Sometimes I notice similarities but I can never quite be sure. Not that it matters really, but it's just nice to know you're talking to the same person on 3 different sites at the same time :rolling:
