1879 Morgan dollar, need help! Hi guys, I just started collecting coins and I need some help from you experts. I recently bought some Morgan dollars for a dollar each. Can anyone tell me how much does this Morgan dollar actually worth?? Thanks a lot.

I am not an expert though I can tell you this, the 1879 Morgan is 90% silver and 10% copper. It contains .7736 troy once of silver. Depending on the the grade, yours looks to be "maybe" extremely fine it not very fine, could bring 16 - 20 dollars maybe more depending on who wants to buy it and how bad they want to buy it. This coin was minted at the Philadelphia mint and there were over 14 million minted. One thing I learned very quickly about the coin market. "A coin is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it". Unless you are going to sell it for silver wieght. But PLEASE don't do that. This coin is too nice to be melted down. Take my advice, if you're just starting to collect coins DON'T sell anything you acquire until you know more about what you are doing. You will regret it if you do, I guaranty it. Howdy morgensol - Welcome to the Forum !! I suggest you weigh the coin, if you don't have a scale take it to a jewelry store and they can weigh it for you. It should weigh 26.73 grams. If it doesn't - it's a fake.
How in the world did you get it for a Buck??? If they prove legit, back the truck up, take all you can get...
Hey guys, thanks a lot for the info. I don't think this coin is facke because some old lady at a local 7-11 was using morgan dollars to buy groceries haha, so I bought whatever she had.
Lol... where I work I consider myself lucky to catch people paying with SBA's or Sacagaweas, an occurence that happens maybe once or twice a month. I ever catch anyone paying with Morgans I'd buy whatever they had too. Have heard of several people who have worked at convenience stores or gas stations having kids pay with silver dollars; likely cases of breaking into their parents' coin collections. My brother received a few Ike and SBA dollars, plus some silver half dollars, at a garage sale from a kid of about 10. Likely he broke into his parents' collection, but we had no idea who the kid was or who his parents were, so we couldn't return them. The 1964-D Kennedy looked very nice. As for adults paying with them, guess it's not impossible, though you think more often than not they'd realize what they had was worth significantly more than face value, unless they either didn't know or didn't care .However back when I had a paper route in Pennsylvania I did receive an American Silver Eagle from someone as if it were just worth face value. Not sure if he was just being generous or honestly didn't know it was worth more than a dollar. It did look like it was circulated a bit... so maybe he received it as a dollar too, lol.
